Climate change: Ban gas grid for new homes 'in six years'
BBC "News" ^ | February 21, 2019 | by Roger Harrabin, BBC environment analyst

New homes should be banned from connecting to the gas grid within six years to tackle climate change, UK government advisers say.

They want new-build homes in the countryside to be warmed by heat pumps - and cooking done on induction hobs, rather than using gas boilers and hobs.

In cities, new housing estates and flats should be kept warm by networks of hot water, says the report.

The water could be heated by waste heat from industry.

An alternative approach is to use heat pumps, which draw warmth from the sea or lakes; or burn gas from waste.

The report, from the independent Committee on Climate Change, recommends these changes are made to new homes at first because it's much more economical that way. They say it costs £4,800 to install low-carbon heating in a new home, but £26,300 in an existing house.

What's more, these systems will only work if homes are insulated to the highest standards so they need little heating.

The committee's spokesperson Prof Julia King told us: "This generation of home-owners is cheating its children by leaving homes which are completely inadequate for an age of climate change.

"They're too cold in winter and increasingly, as the climate continues to warm, they are going to become too hot in the summer."

Boise, Idaho has/had a municipal hot-water heating district, but then it’s sitting atop a geothermal hot springs. Are there a lot of those in England?

Even if true (and it is not) how is this going to help man made climate change?

The UK is but a pimple on the earth. Forcing their citizens to suffer over fake science is ... well insane.

The fall of the British Empire is almost complete.

Still not enough, each tenant needs to have a stationary bike hooked to a generator. When they need electricity they peddle the bike. When they need heat they peddle the bike. Very easy system which I shall use when I campaign for office.

Reporter 'is it true you own a bike manufacturer?'

Answer 'have you seen my campaign app which has all my answers? …… oh and it tracks the users!

The county council of King County, WA where we live has already enacted a “moratorium” on all new “fossil fuel infrastructure”. The leftist morons in England or a day late and a dollar short compared to the leftist morons we have in charge here in Washington State. They have basically cut Puget Sound Energy (states largest utility) off at the knees with this and a myriad of other nonsensical hoops for them to jump through with their fantasy “renewable energy” requirements. The inmates took over the asylum here years ago.

"Industry" needs reliable and cheap power, neither of which would be available.

A central boiler plant was one of the features of heating buildings in the Soviet Union. They used coal to make steam. The Brits are so advanced the will probably use wishful thinking and unicorn farts.

I’m all for higher standards for insulation. I built a 5 star energy rated home in Alaska and it was wonderful. A little more up-front cost that paid for itself almost immediately.

Of course they will have to wait until it dries out to burn it successfully, but igniting all the BS from Climate Change “science” should provide an inexhaustible source of power.

As will the wealthy residents of Westchester New York as their gas company is refusing new residental connections because the state and local governments will not allow the demand for a clean and relatively cheap source of energy be met with additional pipeline capacity. Also, the state's ban on hydraulic fracking means the gas they do get is from out of state and NY's treasury could be flush with $$ if they allowed recovery of that resource. Besides terribly high taxes, why would any business relocate to an area where energy costs to heat are also unnecessarily high?
