From the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (https://www.tsl.texas.gov/exhibits/annexation/part5/question7.html):

“The power to create new states could be exercised only by Congress, with the consent of the affected state legislatures. “

And importantly:

“In 1850, Southerners wanted to exercise the provision to create another slave state from Texas to balance the admission of California as a free state. In one of the provisions of the Compromise of 1850, Texas was instead given a payout of $10 million to give up its northern and western claims. A few years later, the Kansas-Nebraska Act repealed the Missouri Compromise and made the issue of the boundaries a moot point.”

“Although in theory Texas could still be divided into multiple states, ANY possibility of carving additional states from Texas ENDED when the Civil War settled the question of slavery once and for all.”

Please see Post 41.

Not a simple process and unconstitutional at this time.

To make D.C. a state, they’d have to rewrite the Constitution.

That's something the courts will decide. One plan is to shrink the federal district to a small area around the Capitol, the White House and the major memorials and admit the rest as a state. If they have the votes, they could probably get away with it in the courts.

--------

What really needs to happen is a supersized capital district

No, because according to the Constitution the federal district can't be more than 10 miles square. However, a state could be created composed of most of the district and its suburbs.

<> Maryland probably wouldn't support that because they get a lot of money from those suburbs -- and no state can be created from part of another state without that state's approval.

Actually, I think Maryland would go for it if they called it Maryland rather than DC. They have a GOP governor now and could prevent that from ever happening again under the plan I described.

Yeah, DC could be shrunk to a tiny entity around the white house, capital mall and other key government buildings, uninhabited at night save for the president and his immediate family who are registered to vote in their home state.

DC signs off on repeal of the 17th amendment and, in return, gets a voting member of congress under the new Maryland district. Supersized Maryland also gets 7 of the 10 richest counties in America to tax. They won't miss the eastern shore or the panhandle because most of the inhabitants are deplorables anyway.

yes, not simple and the constitutional process would take longer than 2020

FHC and HeA,

NEVER GONNA HAPPEN !!!

Texas has the option to Succeed if it wants to do so.

Texas would never split into 2 or 5 sections/segments/States.

Texas would become The newest Country in the World before it would split into multiple States.

Now go get some high quality Q-Tips and start drilling into your ears and start removeing the Bovine excrement.

Squantos- grab Yer Hip Waders and step on in if Ya like...

Your answer was perfect. Never gonna happen ........

BTW was out hunting Coyotes tonight. Using 6.5 Creedmoor 143gr ELD-M Hornady Match commercial ammo in my Larue PredatOBR rifle with a FLIR PTS233 Thermal Scope mounted. Bunch of new calf’s born last few nights so despite 49 mph winds and local storms I was “lucky” and hit a coyote looking for a free dinner at 840 yards according to a predetermined range earlier in the day when I set up my hide ...... Shot taken at 11pm. Good night for regulating predators . Texas oh dark thirty, Texas made rifle ...... Thats my way of stopping predators who try and take what doesn’t belong to them ..... Stay Safe !

What was your ambient light and temp? No moon out, stars, or overcast?
What’s the magX on that FLIR scope? What kind of reticle?

It makes for fun shooting if You rig the varmits up some little Wind Surfers so they can Tack back and forth.

Wish I didn't have all this Medical crap going on. We would make a road trip and show Mama around Your turf. She has been to Comal County and Denton County coming in IH-20 and return 1 each IH-20 & IH-40. Both have been Business. Heck every time I take Her over to Texas it becomes a Monsoon the whole time We are there. I'm about ready to Lease Her out for Drought Midigation. Heck We had Snow Flurries yesterday A.M.

I have two FLIR tools, soon to add a third called the breach, small hand held versus a dedicated weapon sight. My first purchase was an RS64 FLIR, very good and best for wet weather conditions IMHO .....

Cloud cover killed zero ambient light shy of typical light pollution of wind generators hazards and over the horizon big cities of Amarillo, Borger, Pampa etc .... PVS-14 NVG was useless it was so dark. The FLIR optic doesn’t use ambient light like NVG’s. About 55 degrees at the time with 50mph gusts +/- .

Storms were rolling in from the west in NM. 8X “digital” zoom at max makes the view very grainy / pixelated so I used no more than 3X.

Red illuminated reticle over “white hot” setting from a uncle bucks X shooting bag, prone.

First shot was a miss, quick adjusted point of aim and the little critter was still there thanks to a Surefire SOCOM suppressor ..... as stated Lucky second shot.
