Migrants from Honduras, part of a caravan of thousands from Central America, approach the U.S.-Mexico border fence in Tijuana, Mexico, December 26, 2018. (Mohammed Salem/Reuters) Every indication is that the border situation is going to get increasingly worse. We interrupt the talk of the president manufacturing a crisis at the border with this hair-raising report about the crisis at the border.
Alarming new numbers about border apprehensions from U.S. Customs and Border Protection should puncture the lazy conventional wisdom about the border being under control, except in the lurid imagination of President Donald Trump.
More than 76,000 migrants were apprehended crossing the southern border last month, the highest February in more than 10 years and the highest month of the Trump administration. The number of apprehensions tops any month during the 2014 border surge under President Barack Obama, which no one had a problem calling a crisis at the time.
Every indication is that the situation is going to get worse. We could be about to experience a migrant surge worthy of Angela Merkel at her most openhanded, even though, in immigration terms, Viktor Orban the Hungarian prime minister who favors tough border enforcement is president.
Yes, there were more overall apprehensions in the 2000s. But it was a different population, made up overwhelmingly of adult males from Mexico who might be apprehended trying to cross multiple times and were reliably returned home when they were caught. Now, we are apprehending people but not returning them.
Migrants are coming in greater numbers from Central American countries instead of Mexico, and are primarily families and children. In an astonishing shift, in 2012, 10 percent of apprehended migrants were families and children; in recent months, its been 61 percent.
The rules for dealing with migrants from noncontiguous countries and with family units make it all but impossible to swiftly return or detain them, not to mention that our physical facilities were built with single adults in mind.
There is no mechanism to return these migrants home, to hold them after they cross the border, or to remove them once they are in the interior. And word has gotten out. Theres a reason that the subset of migrants that we cant stop from getting into the country is growing so rapidly.
Needless to say, a spiraling border crisis is maddening for a president committed to controlling the border, which is why weve seen such frenetic activity from Trump.
Hes tried to prosecute all adults crossing the border illegally, and had to abandon it in the (understandable) firestorm over the resulting family separations. Hes tried to jawbone Mexico into helping, with some success, although migrants are still traveling through Mexico in large numbers. Hes tried to tighten up asylum policy but been blocked in the courts. Hes tried to get Congress to fix the rules for dealing with migrants, to no avail. And, of course, hes tried to build a wall.
Trumps rhetoric may be over the top, but the impulse to get a handle on this is absolutely correct.
First, theres the question of basic sovereignty. If we are going to welcome a large number of migrants from three or four foreign countries, we should make that decision as a conscious policy, rather than slip-sliding into it unawares.
Then theres the matter of assimilation and legality. Poorly educated immigrants, like the ones coming from Central America, have the hardest time assimilating, and they will lack legal status on top of it.
Finally, theres the humanitarian question. Migrant families show up needing medical attention that we arent well prepared to provide. Wed be much better positioned to tend to the migrants under our care if the numbers werent overwhelming.
But we are at a stalemate. The New York Times editorialized the other day that Trump declared that theres a crisis at the border, contrary to all evidence. Then, the paper ran a news story headlined, Border at Breaking Point as More than 76,000 Migrants Cross in a Month.
Both of those pieces cant be right. Theres manufacturing a crisis, and then theres ignoring one for fear of conceding anything to Trump.
The Demos DO NOT CONSIDER illegal immigration a “crisis” or anything bad at all.
They see these new illegals as potential voting constituents.
That should tell you everything about their attitude towards building a wall.
To be honest it’s looking more and more to me like us patriots are going to have to take charge of the situation ala The Minutemen only this time much much larger if it’s going to be effective. We are clearly being invaded and the Rat/RINO Uniparty of treason is assisting these invaders. The traitors in the house voted to allow the invaders to vote. How much more are we going to tolerate?

RE: Minutemen
The RATS will call this vigilantism and pass a law to ban such actions. It remains to be seen whether the Republican controlled senate will stop it.
Thats called delusional. The dems have convinced themselves illegal immigration is going to ultimately work out in their favor. I dont see that happening. They cant insulate themselves from the eventual consequences. Those are the consequneces theyve failed/refused to see.
It’s a little late for Rich Lowry to finally be waking up to the Bush Plan for North Mexico (aka USA)
WHY ARE WE ALLOWING CITIZENS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES
WHO ENTER US ILLEGALLY GRANT THEM RIGHTS
THAT THEIR COUNTRY DENY US HAVING
WHEN WE ENTER THEIRS LEGALLY ???
It’s time we consider illegal entry by any person who is a non Mexican citizen illegally entering the United States through the US Mexican border a defacto Mexican citizen with limited Mexican constitutional rights subject to their laws while transiting. As well as any Mexican citizen entering illegaly exempting those who do so legally and meet US citizenship requirements. All subject to reciprocal citizen treatment a citizen of the United States receives in Mexico through the Mexican constitution on citizenship .
Besides being unable to vote one must also be a citizen to own land and Mexico is very restrictive about granting citizenship. Because of that a US citizen besides not being able to vote, and cannot have title in their name to any land property in Mexico. And until that is changed the US and the affected state should consider making that reciprocal. Prohibiting any illegal entrant employment, voting, and land ownership prviledges fully enforced .. .
The RATS will call this vigilantism and pass a law to ban such actions. It remains to be seen whether the Republican controlled senate will stop it.
The RATS hell! George W. Bush called them vigilantes!
No problem. Not only do we not need a wall but we should import millions legally because we don’t have enough turmoil, racial strife or anti-white BS in this nation as it is.
The GOOBs are crazy if they don’t see a national emergency going on. Let them side with the America-haters across the aisle. Americans are going to make them pay in 2020.
Turn these free loaders around and send them and their dozen kids back to where they came from..The democrats want to murder our little babies but want to support illegal to come into this country so they will be taught to vote for the liberals..SEND THEM HOME RIGHT AWAY..
There are only two answers that will work and they both involve dead invaders.
1. Post the military on our border and have them do their job of defending the country. Anything that attacks our border, man woman child dog cat etc, dies.
(Alternately open it up to private citizens who want to do their part in defending the country. No bag limit. No trophies can be take however and shooters must wait until targets enter the range (our side of the border))
2. A more merciful tack is to build a wall (Israel’s wall seems to work well) and then post the military to kill anything coming over it or under it or around it.
You never win a war until you kill enough of the enemy to make them stop wanting to fight.
A literal, daily, year-round invasion... but not an emergency they say.

In the interest of brevity, you could have snipped all that from the excerpt.
I've come to the same conclusion. Our political representatives are, by and large, crooks and abject traitors to their nation and the people. Few besides Trump are honestly fighting for us.
We're at an historic turning point. We either repel this invasion and send the rest of the colonistas home, or this nation, as we know it, is finished.
By "we", I mean you, me, and every other ordinary citizen who loves America. No one's going to save us but us.
Oh, I'm sure the backstabbing RINOs are just quaking in their boots, hearing that. /s
I used to believe that we could save and restore our country through the ballot box, but the performance of the Republicans over the last eighteen years has thoroughly disabused me of that fantasy.
I truly hate to say it, but there's only one way we're going to restore America to its founding promise. If the people make a show of force now, the deep state and the radical left can be 'scared straight'. If we tarry much longer, it'll take real bloodshed to fix it.
Yep, but I don’t think people are going to take the initiative. We can barely organize protests. What scares me is if democrats ever get a majority, the WH and both houses, without question they are going to all out meaning confiscating guns, going socialist, limiting constitutional rights, limiting free speech which tech companies are doing right now anyway, but no doubt they will follow Englands lead and arrest people for “offensive speech” and worst of all they will all but get rid of all border enforcement. Republicans will be toast, they will never get elected again and it will only get worse.
Washington today is nothing like it was pre-Obama. What we have running things now are just blatant domestic enemies of this country and if it was up to me I would tell the military to uphold their oath of enlistment: Defend the country from these domestic enemies. Take them into custody, let them be tried for sedition and treason. This whole “Russia collusion” hoax, is the very definition of sedition. This is a group of people who created a hoax with the sole intent of overturning a government the people voted for. Arrest these mofos! Problem solved!
