Wouldn't be the first time a Democrat utterly ignored the will of the voters and was removed from office. It's how Arnold got in. I suspect you're right, there will be a recall effort, and I'd give it a good 50-50 chance of winning right now.

Nearly 60% rejected removing the death penalty, 56% voted to strip appeals and fast track the carrying out of the sentences.

No, there won’t. It will upset voters, but not enough to rile them up for a recall. Mario Cuomo adamantly opposed the Death Penalty for years, even though the electorate was against it. He was repeatedly reelected until 1994, and his party stayed in power. Leftard-leaning states have a silent majority that wants the death penalty, but they don’t want it enough to do anything about it.
