Filmmaker Ken Burns joins effort to save Hampshire College

One of Hampshire College’s best-known alumni, documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, has joined the effort to help the college endure financial troubles, President Miriam Nelson confirmed in a letter to the college community Wednesday afternoon.

Burns, 65, and seven others are members of the newly created President’s Options Working Group, appointed by Nelson. Burns, who graduated from Hampshire in 1975, is known for documentaries including the Emmy Award-winning “Civil War” and “Baseball” series.

Nelson described the panel as “off-campus community stakeholders” who would be a “sounding board for the trustees and me, conducting their deliberations independently, and a vehicle for communicating with all Hampshire constituencies. They’ll convene for the first time this week to review the College’s financial position and the options currently under consideration, and to discuss protocols for communicating out to the wider Hampshire community.”

...

Hampshire College earlier this year announced it would limit the size of its incoming fall class and lay off nine staff members as it faces financial difficulties and declining enrollment. A second round of layoffs is expected April 1.

Oh no, a failing liberal college might go under. Darn. How will I ever sleep tonight.

Hahah. However the problem seems to be Hampshire is so bad no one wants to even bribe them to let their kid in.

looked at the numbers - smaller than a suburban high school.

Here’s a freeby for them. Who can spot the problem here:

Faculty - 165
Admin Staff - 115

A historic institution - first class was way back there in 1970.

From Wikipedia “an experiment in alternative education”

Looks like the experiment failed.

Tuition is about $50k a year. Any parents that could afford that should be able to bribe their kid into a big name college.

Hampshire college has 1492 students. Oh, my, are they secretly telling us they believe in celebrating Columbus?!

Their tree logo looks sort of like a marijuana leaf.

Check the college out on Wikipedia.

It sounds to me as if the “experiment” has failed in less than 50 years. I doubt the country will lose much if that college goes belly up.

Bernie Sanders has a wife who knows how to deal with this sort of matter.

No problem, Ken Burns and all his millionaire and billionaire friends can easily donate enough to save the Progressive training school.

College Campus Lunacy

Hampshire College will offer some of its students what the school euphemistically calls “identity-based housing.” That’s segregated housing for students who — because of their race, culture, gender or sexual orientation — have “historically experienced oppression.”
