A new statewide poll shows two-thirds of Illinois voters support Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s top policy priority, amending the state constitution to allow a graduated-rate income tax.

The poll, from the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, did not ask participants specifically about the governor’s proposal. But the poll showed that a system under which higher earners are taxed at higher rates is popular throughout the state among both Democrats and independents.

You ask the selected groups the questions you know will give you the answers you want. Push poll.

Duh.. So, people who won’t have to pay a higher tax are happy voting yes to make someone else pay a higher tax. How unusual..

Maybe if we had an actual Republican Party here in Illinois we could put a stop to some of this lunacy.

But we don’t. So we can’t.

A poll showing that people want those other than themselves to pay more taxes is not very surprising. Cf Tragedy of the commons.

So, another false or unverified claim? Weird huh? Does new math explain just why, say, 20% of rich peoples money is not the same as 20% of middle class money? I know. Stoopid question.

The problem with graduated income tax (or any graduated tax) is everybody doesn’t have skin in the game.

A NON-DEDUCTIBLE progressive state/local income tax, with its increased taxes, should quickly push Illinois past the tipping point sending high income taxpayers fleeing the state.

Class warfare sells. It’s how that evil prick FDR seduced a nation. The well off will leave.

Of course the Takers want someone else to support them, especially the Makers whom they resent. The problem is the people who are the productive citizens and job creators will simply leave the state thereby reducing the taxbase.

Fools, don't they know that when it FAILs to or even reduces revenues, they will become the next tax target?

Fools, can't they already see folks and businesses streaming out of the state?

Fools, can't they see the state pensions imploding even after being repeatedly shored up.

The state is going bankrupt. It is only a matter of time now.

Yep, just like CT. Now they have an income tax AND a “Luxury” tax.

Add this to the constitutional protection of public employee pensions and you can look forward to state banruptcy.

So the poll results support the status quo?

We already have a “graduated income tax’”

No mention of state or federal.

Push poll indeed.

I think California goes up to 12% at the max.
So crank it up and more Illinoisans can migrate to Texas or Florida.
