Slovakia could elect its 1st female head of state

Voters in Slovakia are selecting a new head of state in a runoff that could give the country its first female president.

Zuzana Caputova, an environmental activist, is up against European Commission vice-president Maros Sefcovic in the vote for the largely ceremonial post in the nation of 5.4 million.

Caputova won the first round two week ago with 40.6 percent of the vote while Sefcovic was a distant second with 18.7 percent.

Caputova attracts voters appalled by corruption and mainstream politics. Sefcovic is a career diplomat who is supported by the leftist Smer-Social Democracy party, a major force in Slovak politics.

The winner will become the country's fifth head of state since Slovakia gained independence in 1993 after Czechoslovakia split in two.

Incumbent Andrej Kiska did not stand for a second term.

This isn’t a good presidential election at all. Both candidates in the run-off are bad. Maros Sefcovic is a former Communist and current Vice-President of the European Commission. You can’t be more pro-EU than that. He is trying to appeal to the more socially-conservative section of the Slovak electorate, but can you believe that he isn’t socially-liberal? Did he oppose all those pro-LGBT+ initiatives of the European Commission? Of course not.

Zuzana Caputova portrays herself as an anti-corruption candidate, but is socially-liberal (at least for Slovakia) and every bit as pro-EU as Maros Sefcovic.

Stefan Harabin, who ended up third in the first round, is a former Communist who is anti-EU and pro-Putin. He converted to Orthodoxy and was a socially-conservative candidate.

Frantisek Miklosko, who ended up fourth in the first round, was probably the least bad candidate. He is genuinely socially-conservative (Catholic), but quite pro-EU too.

Wow, both these candidates sucked. The chick won.

The fourth place candidate seems kinda....Seig Heily

The dude you mentioned, Miklosko, was actually 5th. I guess there wasn’t a candidate that was like a normal conservative, anti-EU but not Russophillic either. Maybe the 7th place Milan Krajniak “We are family” party, I hate that song though. ;p

Good thing the position holds little power.

You are right. I forgot about Marian Kotleba. He really has pro-Nazi inclinations.

Unfortunately, these days there aren’t many conservative politicians in Europe because there aren’t many conservative Christians. The situation is slightly better in Central and Eastern Europe, especially in Poland.

The problem is that the media in my country, the Czech Republic, see the main conflict line in politics as pro-EU vs. pro-Putin and it seems that most voters see it in a similar way. Only those voters who are well-read about political ideas from the conservative point of view (those who have read conservative or classical-liberal authors) reject this false dichotomy.

In Poland, the media can’t do that because, for historical reasons, the number of Polish who support Russia is very small.

Heh. This reminds me of last year when the GOP committeeman from the 10th District of Illinois (e.g., RINO Inc.) Mark Shaw tried to challenge Illinois Republican Party chairman Tim Schneider from the RIGHT and claim to be the "more conservative" candidate and played up how "pro-life, pro-gun, and pro-family" he was.

Shaw supporters: We GOTTA support Shaw because he is the PRO-LIFE, PRO-GUN, PRO-TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE candidate for the IL GOP!! He represents the TEA PARTY!!!

Me: That's odd. Last time I checked, all the Republicans from the district he represents are as far-left on social issues as it gets. He helped elect uber RINOs Bob Dold and Mark Kirk, who are so far left on abortion they support partial birth abortion. When's the last time Mr. Shaw actually supported, endorsed, or campaigned for a pro-life, pro-gun, or pro-traditional marriage candidate?

Shaw supporters: LALALALALALA WE CAN'T HEAR YOU!
