True. I’ve noticed in my 35-year career in the workplace that the reasons for termination rarely seem to be those actually sited. Usually HR is laying a trap and covering it with sticks for the NEXT event. Gotta document that termination so that everything is in accord with “the Rules”.
All that said, this particular non-event is the flimsiest excuse for a firing that I’ve ever heard of.

It kinda sounds like the poor old guy had it up to here with the kind of political correctness that goes around the workplace these days,
