Notre Dame Cathedral on Fire
The Telegraph ^ | 15 APRIL 2019 | David Chazan, Paris James Rothwell

Notre Dame cathedral has caught fire, according to the Parisian fire service and eyewitnesses.

Footage posted online shows a large fire engulfing the upper part of the cathedral, with the flames licking around its two bell towers.

A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.

Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to renovation works being carried out at the cathedral.

It comes after France's Saint Sulpice church , used in the filming of Dan Brown’s ‘Da Vinci Code’ thriller, caught fire in March.

Thank you for your manners. You deserve credit for keeping this thread from going up in flames.

Why would muzzies climb up into the attic, where they say this fire started, to start a fire?

If that's for real, that is AMAZING!!!

Of COURSE it is real!!

Don't you remember in the Gospels when the tomb was entered?

The crown was sitting right on top of the head wrapping!!

Let the Non Nobis and the Te Deum be sung.

(And I think King Harry would heartily approve of this line being used in this present context, even though the first uttering of line was placed in his mouth in a somewhat different context)

I realize now that the remark was not simply doubting the authenticity of a relic, but rejecting it. Sorry for missing that. Yet the basis for the claimed authenticity of such is still that of the veracity of Rome.

“If this is a real picture, my hat is off to the French fire fighters.”

I suspect this is. I’m pleasantly surprised so much is standing.

One of the hardest parts is that the amazing, beautiful windows are most likely gone.

Question is will the French rebuild?

And I hope they got the archived stuff in the basement out.

... is not the place to discuss relics.

Why not?

We've already passed the landmark number: 666

Are there not hundreds of CANDLES on fire at any one time in the church?

maybe daniel1212 would be so kind as to suggest to everyone that now, or at least this thread, is not the place to discuss relics.

I did not start it, but responded to the implicit promotion of Rome that was introduced in response to the rejection of the authenticity of a relic. But fine if relics are not to be discussed, yet there are the gargoyles of Notre-Dame that watch over the building

- https://www.pariscityvision.com/en/paris/landmarks/notre-dame-de-paris/gargoyles-notre-dame

The hundreds of grotesque gargoyles of Notre Dame may well survive the fire. They are there as both rain spouts to channel the water from the roof and as symbolism used by the Catholic Church to depict evil and keep evil spirits away with equally evil creations. They were added in the 13th century. - https://www.thedailybeast.com/notre-dame-fire-the-paris-treasures-now-at-risk-from-the-flames

Because there is a time for everything, and now is not the time for that, at least not on this thread. If you want to discuss that, go start another thread and leave this one in peace.

I think the Birds may have been quoting something that you ought to recognize.

I just saw a post and photo on Conservative Tree House that said “Only a small part of the vault collapsed. Interior seems relatively untouched”.

The interior does seem relatively untouched. No pews that I could see were burned and there were even candles untouched.

The big gold cross was shining in the light.

Solomon; right??

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

To every thing there is a season,
and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate;
A time of war, and a time of peace.

There are, but the fire started in the "attic," which is where the wood was, not the candles. The pictures we're getting of the nave show that it was largely untouched except for the center, where the roof collapsed. The nave is of course stone, but the roof was lead supported by wood. Lots of wood ... very old and therefore very well-seasoned wood.

While there have been some attempts to attach theological significance to gargoyles, the name seems to derive from their drain-spout function. The artists probably thought it was a lot more fitting to have streams of water coming at you from something that looked nasty than to have it coming forth from a saint.

And we should be thankful that the drainage system has at least been partially salvaged.
