U.S. starts building first polar-class icebreaker in 40 years

The ice in the Arctic is melting and opening new navigation routes, with Russia responding with a fleet of 44 icebreakers and China developing its own fleet although they are nowhere near polar regions.

The United States had just one operational polar-class icebreaker. The 42-year old Polar Star was assigned permanently to Antarctic waters.

"We have to get in the game," Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said in Seattle on Thursday.

"We are an Arctic nation without Arctic resources," added Murkowski who chairs the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

The ice is melting so we need icebreakers. Does this rag even look at what it publishes before it goes out the door?

RINO Murkowski must be skimming cash from this project somewhere down the line.

Why is the Polar Star in the Southern hemisphere?

It supports U.S. scientific activities in Antarctica. It's winter down there now. Lots of ice.

Forget this from the OP:
“The 42-year old Polar Star was assigned permanently to Antarctic waters. “

“Why is the Polar Star in the Southern hemisphere?”

Aren’t there US science stations in Antarctica? Just a guess. My buddies Step Son just did a rotation down there on the Polar Star.

What a terrible waste of tax payer dollars. Al Gore said the arctic circle will be ice free by now.
