altimore city government computers were infected with ransomware Tuesday, the mayors office said, the second time in just over a year that hackers demanding payment disrupted the citys technology systems.
Employees are working diligently to locate the source and extent of the infection, said Lester Davis, a spokesman for Democratic Mayor Bernard C. Jack Young.

Davis said critical systems, including 911 and 311, were not been affected, but that the majority of city servers were shut down. The effects ranged from a City Council committee canceling a hearing on gun violence to water customers being unable to get billing questions answered.

No problem. Just restore from backups. You DID back up everything, right?
I WONDER why everything is soooo screwed up in Baltimore.
Ask the Mayor
Three black female mayors in a row will do it quite nicely.
A thought from another site: “Incriminating evidence being deleted?” about the mayor that disappeared and resigned.
Karma, bad things happen to bad people.
Ask the mayor.
"Pay us $1 or we will delete all evidence of your corruption, graft and criminal acts."
Jokes on the ransomware makers....
“..I WONDER why everything is soooo screwed up in Baltimore....”
Destroyed by many stereotypical RATS. No mystery.
“No problem. Just restore from backups. You DID back up everything, right?”
Uh, the person who does that is on extended family leave. Sorry.
Some ransomware kicks off several days after initial infection. Thus, it is often INCLUDED in the backup and when you restore the backup, you restore the ransomware. If security controls are not present to ensure a clean DR environment and restoration, you have a high probability of a subsequent infection.
Is this “The Wire”?
Restoring the backups may not work, what if the ransomware has been installed for weeks and only activated today.
If you restore the backups, what’s to say they are not infected as they are restored....
I’m pretty sure someone smart enough to write the ransomware has thought about this and taken counter measures...
Homeland’s Carrie showed how to handle ransomware pirates. Go over to his place, show him your boobs, then beat him until he fixes things and threaten to kill him if he ever does it again.
They just wanted some space.
