Back in 2003, we used I-80 to come back out West from a visit-the-relatives safari in PA. Stopped off at a WalMart in Lexington to get some supplies. The place CRAWLED with women in scarves and long dresses. Wife asked who are they. I just guessed they were Somalis.
At the checkout, the Somali woman ahead of me kept pulling out plastic cards (six of 'em) until one of them had enough to pay for the goods. After she left, I asked the Hispanic clerk if those were EBT cards. She just shrugged. I asked her if she knew who paid for them. Shrug again. I said to look in the mirror. No shrug this time, just deer in the headlights.
When we left the store, I spotted the gigantic Tyson plant across the street and everything fell into place.
Back on the road, we discussed the chicken-egg thingy: Did WalMart locate near the Interstate to snag passing traffic and Tyson followed, or did Tyson locate there first and WalMart came in to grab the customers? The conclusion was that Tyson did not locate last in order to take advantage of WalMart's low prices.
