the EU parliament is analogous to Congress (the EU council of ministers - with its spokeperson Donald Tusk is analogous to the Senate with veto powers and the EU commission (Junckers) is the US civil service.
The EU parliament has elections every 4 years and these guys are based on population - so the UK has 73 out of 570 odd MEPs
The elections will be for these 73 MEPs - last time around, in 2015, there were 8 UKIP MEPs elected - one of whom was Nigel Farage
That’s a possibility but not a probability
1. Farage is a single-issue candidate
2. Farage has never won any political seat in the UK - not that he may not in the future, but in the past he’s never won any. he’s only been an MEP
3. His party has no other issues or topics
4. If he tries to take over the Tories, then Boris Johnson, Rees-Mogg, Gove etc. would want to be PM, not him
The EU is a confederation of 28 independent and sovereign countries.
This confederation consist of these 28 countries that have agreed to act jointly in terms of economic and other policies. This helps a tiny country like Estonia (1 million people) punch above its weight). It also helps countries like the UK, Italy etc. freely export in a common market. It also maintains standards so you know when you are selling or buying something in the EU it meets a certain standard that is agreed by all
The confederation consists of 3 components
Analogous to Congress - the EU parliament. For which there will now be the elections
analogous to the senate - the EU council of ministers
anaology to the President - the heads of government of the 28 countries
analogous to the US civil service - the EU commission
the EU elections are to the EU parliament. These guys approve or reject regulation proposals. If they approve it, then the regulation goes to the individual countries legislative assemblies for approval or rejection
