Complex Eyes of ‘Simple’ Clams Confound Darwin

May 13, 2019 | Jerry Bergman

by Jerry Bergman, PhD

Darwin is famous for admitting that the origin of complex structures made him sick: In The Origin of Species, we read:

“To suppose that the eye with all its inimitable contrivances for adjusting the focus to different distances, for admitting different amounts of light, and for the correction of spherical and chromatic aberration, could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree.”[1]

The eyes of the sea scallop Placopecten magellanicus. (A) Eyes arrayed along the valve mantle margins of a live P. magellanicus. The scale bar represents 5 mm. (B) Cross-section of an eye from P. magellanicus. The sample was stained with Hoechst dye, staining cell nuclei blue, and alpha-tubulin, staining green. The pigment layer underneath the mirror appears red in the image and in vivo. (C) A labeled diagram corresponding to (B). The scale bar in (B) and (C) represents 100 μm.

From the article by Bergman:

” A new study found this arrangement was not poor design, but rather ingenious design. The scallop pupils can dilate and contract, changing the size of the pupil opening by about 50 percent. Their eyes lack irises like human eyes. Instead, the cornea cells change shape from thin and flat to tall and long. These contractions also change the cornea’s curvature, indicating the scallop eye changes shape to respond to light to form more crisper images on the proximal retina.”

Evolution is just watered down selective breeding. But, even selective breeding cannot breed a chicken with 4 legs or a horse with wings. However, to explain the fossil record, it needs to be powerful enough to do just that.

And, NO ONE has come up with any reasonable theory on how DNA evolved. I have examined the literature.

Fishtank is more obsessed with Darwin than CNN is with President Trump.

Why do scallops have better eyes than humans?

We started out with four legs. Then Darwin decided that it would be better to free up a couple to grab things like tree limbs with. So he evolved hands and upright posture.

I would check that site for humor purposes, it’s such a joke to anyone with a functioning, evolved, brain.

Why do scallops have better eyes than humans?

I’ll have to ask our Creator that one day! lol
Birds fly much better than we do as well!

Well, when you can’t answer the questions posed and logic presented, humor can be a great, (evolved I am sure), defense mechanism.
Just ask the Trump haters and climate hoax deniers.

If intellectual and academic integrity were ever demanded, it would be in the field of Creation Science.

I've debated atheists before. They long ago decided to reject any notion of a Supreme Being because to accept such would demand they submit themselves to a Power higher than themselves.

That, they aren't going to do. As a result, they have no choice but to accept the alternative, regardless how preposterous. That's atheistic evolution. Preposterous.

Yup, and the urban ferals are the fruits of their labors:

Nobody had to design it. It naturally arises in the conditions in which life existed/exists.

Eyes as a light sensing organ arise quickly (maybe tens of thousands of generations) with even small amounts of selection for light sensitivity.

Quite readily replicated in generative network simulations.

All that said, the real question is how did the conditions get there? Why is the universe and earth in particular so finely tuned?

Very glib, albeit a complete misrepresentation of what evolution requires from any given species. All that is required is for a scant minority of one or two mutations in an individual organism to result in the ability of its offspring to better exploit a biological niche.

Time, climate and geological change take care of the rest.

And no I do not believe evolution explains how life came to be in existence, let alone on this planet.

Only Colonel Sanders could do that.

Evolution is a very popular religion. It has nothing to do with science.
