Mark Steyn: Smuggling Conrad Black over the border was always my Plan B
National Post ^ | 17 May 2019 | Mark Steyn

The last time I saw my old boss Conrad Black was a week ago. It was a very Conradian occasion: We ended up keeping a visiting prince (not from the House of Windsor, as it happens) waiting in the lobby, and by the time we parted on the doorstep the conversation had worked its way round to Doris Day, then still among us. When Miss Day died a few days later, almost all the broadcast tributes played a snippet of:

Que Sera Sera
Whatever will be will be
The future’s not ours to see…

That’s a little fatalistic for my tastes. Nevertheless, in just a very few areas of life the future is ours to see, with piercing clarity: For example, if you attract the attention of America’s federal justice system, you’re going down, no question. You have the “right to a fair trial,” but U.S. prosecutors win 99 per cent of the cases that go to court — a success rate that would embarrass Kim Jong Un and Saddam Hussein. Indeed, the feds win 97 per cent without ever going near court. In 2007, on the first day of Conrad Black’s trial on the 12th floor of the Mies van der Rohe skyscraper that houses Chicago’s dozens of federal courtrooms, I went looking for somewhere to make a discreet call on my cellphone. There were people everywhere — reporters, lawyers, spouses, curious deputy attorneys dropping in from neighbouring offices, a fan of mine wanting me to autograph my Broadway book to his pal John Mahoney from “Frasier”… Eventually, I pushed open a door and found myself in an empty courtroom. So I phoned from there in complete privacy. When others attending the trial discovered the room, I went to the empty courtroom further down the corridor....

Steyn once called America’s Federal Prosecurtorial and Justice System a “clogged toilet.”

After watching the likes of Comey, McCabe, Mueller and Weissman operate the last 2 years, I fully understand what he means.

Another home run by Steyn.

Something needs to be done about our justice system wherein prosecutors have the “means” to bankrupt a citizen with “due process.”

It’s a corrupt system heavily reliant on blackmail.

It's the modern version of the rack and strappado, and for the same reasons.

Revamping the Judicial branch is the single most vital work Trump is doing. The citizenry lives in abject fear of the blackguards who comprise the justice system in the US.

The goal of the justice system is total annihilation of the accused. It is not justice. It is tyranny. Let it now be done to them just as they have done to others.

That’s one of the most important articles an American can read.

And once again President Trump has proved his greatness by granting Conrad Black a pardon.

Louis, you read my mind! When you reflect on what that $hitball Mueller and his corrupt, lawless little band did to Flynn and others, it is quite clear that there needs to be a complete overhaul of our Federal Prosecution “System!”

The federal government has an unlimited budget and a magic list of laws that they can use to convict anybody they want.

And Steyn still has the Hockey Stick Mann to deal with in court.

Steyn is correct to be appalled by the lack of Justice afforded by the US Legal system if you can’t pay the freight and do the time.

It is incredibly ironic that a child predator can skate free due to the lack of a proper dot above the i or a crossed t, yet these white collar process crimes can live through the most duplicitous exposures in the courtroom, including outright slapdowns by SCOTUS.

Then again, Congress’ abject abandonment of any restraint on the judicial system that results in confiscations of billions of dollars with absolutely no proof (only casual inference), it is unsurprising that one’s life is but a toy to unrestrained prosecutors.

Steyn certainly has a way with words. BTW, he is substituting for Rush tomorrow and Wednesday. Without a doubt, the finest “sinister foreign guest host” in all the land.

Since Steyn referenced my early love Doris Day. Few know she made polka recordings with Frank Yankovich one of which was You Are My Sunshine.

There’s no question the bomber is guilty of bombing, and, if I had my way, he’d have been dangling from a gibbet six weeks after, but this kind of wanker sophistry degrades the very concept of law.

His prose is better than Buckley's...Steyne maybe not have as big a vocabulary as WFB but he is certainly more cleverly biting, and I like that.

If America’s courtrooms are empty due to our indefensible legal system, how are our multitude of lawyers still able to make a living? And why don’t they work together to improve the system?

As I recall from my meagre study of judicial systems, it’s no fun having to sit around Pommeroy’s wine bar all day without a brief.

At least America’s lawyers should support Donald Trump who’s working to improve things. And why not a few lawyer-led protest rallies? Screaming “No Justice, No $500-an-Hour Legal Fees!” in front of America’s courthouses would at least bring attention to their plight.
