Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak Vetoes National Popular Vote Bill
Breitbart ^ | May 30, 2019 | Joshua Caplan

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) on Thursday vetoed a bill which would have pledged the state’s six electoral votes to the winner of the popular vote for President of the United States.

“Once effective, the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact could diminish the role of smaller states like Nevada in national electoral contests and force Nevada’s electors to side with whoever wins the nationwide popular vote, rather than the candidate Nevadans choose,” a statement via Sisolak reads. “I recognize that many of my fellow Nevadans may disagree on this point and I appreciate the legislature’s thoughtful consideration of this important issue. As Nevada’s governor, I am obligated to make such decisions according to my own conscience. In cases like this, where Nevada’s interests could diverge from the interests of large states, I will always stand up for Nevada.”

Good for him.

However, the ‘law’ in the various states will likely be nullified by the first real court challenge. It disenfranchises the voters in the various states in lieu of the national vote.

While I am not in favor of getting rid of the Electoral College, I do wonder about it.

So you mean to tell me if a Candidate wins the California vote by just one vote, he gets ALL of California’s EVs?

I don’t see how that’s really fair, neither.

Good God, a Democrat who gets it.

Wow, right now, at least for today, Gov. Sisolak is my hero. He has put principle above party and has done what is right for Nevada. I didn’t think democrats had it in them anymore!

What made the Constitution palpable to the less
populous fledgling states was the inclusion of
the electoral system. Take that away and you take away
a key reason for the adoption of the Constitution by
those states. The contract will be broken and those
states should be able to leave the Union if they
so choose.

Amazing these days to find a Democrat who remains a patriot—or even rational. Good for him.

Yep, and John Bel Edwards in Louisiana signing the fetal bill. When these guys do the right thing, we have to applaud them because a straight up Democrat (noticed I didn’t say Demonrat) is as rare as hens teeth.......;)

I personally prefer the way Mane and Nebraska allocate their electoral votes. One per congressional district and two to the winner of the entire state. It would eliminate candidates ignoring entire states that are unwinnable if there are districts that are worth fighting over in that state.

The bill passed in the state assembly 23-17. That is a total of 40 and had a couple of abstentions/absences. If all 42 members showed up it would take 28 (2/3) votes to override. The senate voted 12-8 for the bill (3/5) which is less than 2/3 but closer to 67%.

People need to stop celebrating this man. He didnt suddenly find a copy of the Constitution. He knows that if no one needs NV votes then there is no reason to send as much pork to NV.

Thank you. Sometimes it gets a bit frustrating when people vent about issues without referencing the underlying substance behind every issue in America, the Constitution. For the governor not to even acknowledge its existence as the only lawful document protecting the electoral college indicates ignorance, not political wisdom.
