This is a monthly posting of Twitter follower growth for the past month for 2020 presidential candidates.

Last Month's Post Here.

This is unscientific but I have observed that Twitter growth in followers can be a strong indicator of candidate "popularity" and we certainly saw that in 2016, when it was Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and the eventual winner Donald Trump who month after month saw the highest growth in followers. My 2016 tracking showed "front-runners" like Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio with comparatively slower Twitter follower growth months before they eventually dropped out of the race. So Twitter follower growth can certainly be a leading indicator of whether a candidacy is going flat or surging.

I am currently tracking 51 candidates - formally announced as well as any other notable individuals showing interest - up from 44 last month as people continue to pile into the race.

Only the Top 20 in follower growth (over the past month) make the cut for this posting, but there are another 31 candidates "bubbling under" and I will list those later in this thread.

I also added a column that shows percentage growth of followers. I don't personally like this metric because it skews in favor of candidates who have comparatively few followers (see Michael Bennet as an example here - who has ever heard of him?) and disfavors candidates who have already built millions of followers, who are just not going to be able to double their supporters in one month but show massive growth nonetheless. But many have requested it so I have it in here.

This was another very active month with a lot of candidates (mostly on the Democrat side) jockeying for position.

Will there be a "Donald Trump" emerging on the Democrat (or Independent side)? Right now we are not seeing it. For the third consecutive month, Pete Buttgieg is the Democrat with greatest number of new followers (112,201) but that is way down the 362,465 new followers he gained the month before. Contrast this to President Trump picking up nearly 800,000 new followers last month alone for a total of over 60,000,000. Nobody even comes close to Trump here.

"Groping Joe" Biden was looking strong last month but this month, he only picked up 31,185 new followers.

Beto O'Rourke's candidacy has pretty much cratered. For the second month in a row, Beto actually LOST followers, which is pretty much fatal in a presidential run.

Also letting you know that both Pocahontas Liz Warren and Bernie Sanders have adopted new Twitter handles for their presidential runs. I added those handles to my tracking and will incorporate them into next month's survey. For now, I am using their legacy handles.'

Here (below) are the Top 20 for June:

TOPICS: Politics/Elections
KEYWORDS: democrats; election; twitter

I had to look up Gravel. The dude is 89!

Buttguy is definitely a contender. He’ll likely end up among the top three, and has an outside chance of getting the nomination. He’ll no doubt have fervent ground support.

The moron Booker is toast.

I thought Ryan had potential, because he’s portrayed as a moderate, but he needs to get some media attention if he wants to contend.

I think the top three contenders will be Buttguy, Biden and Harris. Warren will start to fade after California.

My .02? Dems are cramming the field with radical leftists so the working class and blue collar (who aren’t on board with the pervs and also minorities) will flock to Biden. He will get elected and move further left in policy.

Your demographic is very skewed towards a certain age group that likes to follow on Twitter. It is not representative of likely voters.
But it is still interesting. Thanks for all that work.

I agree! This site has information on social media users across different platforms. This is their Twitter by the numbers page. Other platforms are on the sidebar.
