It also reflects a cultural issue - there’s a lot of people the President’s age that were brought up to believe that “only bad people use suppressors,” long confirmed and reinforced by Hollywood movies and before that in pulp fiction and the press.

Suppressors sounds like a euphemism to disguise their purpose.

But I am ignorant on this and curious as to who uses silencers, particularly on handguns, for good purposes?

“Silencers” are not really silent... But a lot of people who are familiar with weapons know that. It seems Hollywood and the press and even some politicians, Trump included, don’t understand that you can’t really Silence firearms effectively. You can suppress the noise somewhat but it’s still very audible, nothing like Hollywood would portray as a whispering fart sound.

The most effective suppressor I ever witnessed was an automatic .22 with a low velocity cartridge fired with a suppressor and it was fairly quiet. I’ve also heard suppressed 12 gauges which because the gas is coming out of the tube at a slower rate it is a little bit easier to suppress. But most weapons unless they are firing a very specialized cartridge are not even really affected by a suppressor, and most low velocity rounds loaded for suppression use aren’t really that quiet either.

I think it’s important to know that it is another one of those black gun arguments because they are black and assault looking they must be something evil about them. They are not e-vile Hollywood’s false betrayal seems to have oozed into the mindset of many people who just don’t know squat about weapons.

If you really want to promote gun control in this country, Hollywood is going to have to stop making movies with gun violence in them, or guns at all. Perish that thought...
