Drug Company to Pay Just $15.4 Million Over Doctor Bribery Scandal . . .

Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals announced today that the company expects to pay $15.4 million in a settlement with the U.S. Justice Department after allegations that Questcor Pharmaceuticals, which Mallinckrodt acquired in 2014, had bribed doctors and their staff to prescribe an incredibly expensive drug.

Two whistleblowers came forward in April to accuse Questcor of trying to boost profits for Acthar, a medication primarily for infants with seizures. Questcor raised the price of the medication by almost 100,000 percent (not a typo) from just $40 in 2000 to $38,892 today, despite the fact that Acthar has been on the market since 1952. Mallinckrodt currently rakes in about $1 billion per year from Acthar, according to CNN.

Unfortunately this is what leads to socialized medicine. Big Pharama price gouging the vulnerable is immoral. This goes far beyond just "making a profit". People who are "mad as hell and aren't going to take it anymore" will seek refuge in any port in a storm. Unfortunately that port might be socialized medicine.

Did ALL the people that knew or were involved in this go to jail????........The Doctors that took bribes as well??

If Not..... I can solve the problem..../s

Crimes committed by “Educated Suits and Ties” should command a higher amount of incarceration by the simple fact they should have known better...

Same for Dirty Cops and Politicians....

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Some guy who breaks into your house and steals a $500 TV is a felon, does some jail time, and loses certain civil rights.

A guy in a suit raises the price of a drug (which has been around 70 years) from $40 to $40,000 dollars and he's slapped on the wrist. The doctors who took the bribes to participate in the scheme apparently aren't facing any consequences.

It's not just money. Doctors are swayed to push drugs by other means too.

That same thinking and standard should apply to the current GOVERNMENT COUP scandal as well...

If *75-100 of us from FR tried a “soft coup” for the good of the nation” during the Obama yrs we'd all be swinging from ropes and broadcast live as a reminder of the penalty for SEDITION... * 75-100 is closer to the number of perps that participated or knew and said nothing..

The only way to get rational prices is to allow the free market to work. Now if it means that in certain cases when pharma has a monopoly (only one making a critical drug), anti-trust action could make sense or regulation of essential services in the same manner as a utility guaranteeing a profit for the company to provide the services.

Socialized medicine simply creates a government monopoly and prices tend to be depressed causing shortages or they may be too high when corporate interests lobby politicians for higher prices and special protections (vaccines) .

Sorry that won’t work. There’s no place to put her pharma ID badge.

This isn’t just big pharma. This is the working class paying for the millions of doses given under medicare and medicaid.
Medicare & Medicaid are the primary drivers of the high costs paid on everyones elses backs.
That’s after you pay taxes. Just more taxation without representation for the working class.
10k more illegals per month are getting freebies your kids and grandkids will never hive.
Top notch care for the bottom 1/3.. i saw it every day in 30 years of healthcare.

#8: "Now if it means that in certain cases when pharma has a monopoly (only one making a critical drug), anti-trust action could make sense"

In the article it's disclosed a similar drug in Canada sells for $33 per does, HOWEVER although the drug is approved for use in the USA, Questor bought the US distribution rights and DECIDED not to sell it, instead selling the $40,000 dollar version. Sounds like an illegal monopoly. That sort of crap is anti-freemarket and in other fields would be prosecuted.
