Given the history of the past 100 years or so, are white conservative Americans eligible to demand reparations from white liberals?
I grew up in a coal mining town. Became an engineer\scientist\businessman. I sit in cafes and watch these people who have never done anything in their hippocratic lives with their computers and phones and wonder how long it would be for them to take their own lives if they had to live under the circumstances I have had to live under.
I had a favorite aunt, long deceased, who was born & raised in the Arkansas Ozarks, but spent most of her life in St Louis after marrying my dad's brother. A favorite story of mine came from when my mother, a N Dak girl, was sitting next to my aunt in St Louis in the mid-60s. This was during the centennial of the Civil War, and it was frequently a topic in the news whenever another 100th anniversary of this or that battle came up.
But anyway, on this occasion, while they were talking about totally unrelated subjects, my aunt suddenly blurted out, "It still makes me mad that we lost that war!" Not having any idea what she was talking about, my confused Mom asked her,
"Huh? Which war?"
"The War Between The States".
"Oh, but I thought we WON that war".
Being close friends, they both then laughed their heads off.
Late last summer I was going thru my Folks' archives and found a great photo of my aunt from many decades back. I snapped a cell photo and texted it to my St. Louis cousin, who I seldom communicate with, telling her how much I still missed her Mom.
She of course texted back how much she appreciated that. And at some point I felt prompted to share that favorite story, thinking she would get as big a chuckle out of it as I have.
I was astounded at the reply, which was along the lines of, "I don't believe that! How dare you? My mother wasn't a racist! She always taught us to treat black people just like whites!"
I quickly tried to make amends with, "Of course! I don't believe your Mom had a racist bone in her body! I wasn't saying that or even remotely implying it......"
But things only unfrosted a tiny bit. And that's when I realized she had drunk the Leftist's Grape Kool-aid, and her current state of Wokeness equated anything remotely related to Lost Cause nostalgia - even an incident occurring as far back as 1964 - with virulent racism. My cousin couldn't comprehend how a white southerner born in the 1930s could be both a non-racist AND still be irked by the outcome of "Mr. Lincoln's War".
She accurately remembered her mother's lack of racist feelings. But she was totally mistaken if she thought that this meant that her mother - then or now - would be in favor of the mass removal of all Confederate memorials in the south, State flags revamped, the renaming of anything with a dead white slaveowners name on it ("Tubman, DC" anyone?), removal of Washington & Jefferson images from currency & Mt Rushmore, massive reparations payments, etc.
The definition of Woke changes so often and so quickly that my cousin might not even have any memories of her previous iterations of being Woke. She likely misremembers and believes that she herself has always been against Confederate monuments, and probably thinks anyone who doesn't agree is a hateful racist bigot. And I'll bet she's forgotten that Obama stated to the whole world in 2008 that he was against gay marriage. She probably thinks she's been in favor of gay marriage & Trannie Rights all her life, and that "others" are all hateful bigots, and would probably be shocked to be shown Obama's statement.
Don’t believe for a second that white liberals hate their own ethnic group; everything they do is towards an end, and they certainly aren’t flocking into “diverse” neighborhoods to be down with the struggle. They are NIMBY perfectionists, determined to keep THEIR world “white”.
I’m a little surprised that none of the comments here reference the extent which the leftists described in this article are espousing positions not because they actually have a particular moral quality but because they want to portray themselves, to others or to themselves, as having that quality. Compassion and care about others is the clearest example.
The article suggests that Liberals are more compassionate, and concerned about others, than Conservatives. In my own experience, this is not actually true. Liberals talk more about this quality than Conservatives do, but they do less than the Conservatives. And what Liberals do do, mostly, is not actually give of themselves or their time but agitate for having the government give — which means, of course, giving away not your own money but someone else’s money.
As everyone on FreeRepublic knows, that’s not compassion. Calling it compassion is simply a pose.
“Wokeness,” or the SJW tiny weenie whoops, only finds a hearing in leftist university towns and the neo-Nazi/communist media.
If a troglodyte leftist tries to push the woke weenie brand outside of the rat-infested leftist havens, he’ll be mocked or get his face rearranged if he comes armed with sticks and stones.
The Social Justice Weenie knows this and stays close to the dwellings of his fellow weenie wimps. It’s true that this weenie infestation needs to be watched as one would keep an eye on a hill of fire ants, ready to dose the hill with petro and set it on fire should conditions warrant that.
