Germany: Dozens of raids over online hate speech

Police in Germany launched dozens of raids across the country on Thursday as part of a crackdown on incitement crimes being spread on the internet. The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has said it searched residences in 13 federal states as part of a coordinated operation.

One of the largest operations took place in the western city of Koblenz, where the apartments of 12 suspects were searched in connection to two right-wing extremist Facebook groups. The 12 suspects were between the ages of 45 and 68, and were believed to be responsible for the groups called “The Patriots,” and “Our Germany is patriotic and free.”

Between December 2017 and April 2018, several violations of Germany’s hate speech laws were reported, including a comment that migrant family reunification applicants should “all be gassed.”

The suspects are also believed to have openly called for members to commit crimes, incited racial and religious hatred, and used banned symbols — the use of Nazi-associated imagery is illegal in Germany.

The BKA said one of the administrators of the Facebook groups was also a leading member of a local chapter of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. …

"the use of Nazi-associated imagery is illegal in Germany."

But the police busting down your door and hauling you away for your political beliefs is not.

Interesting. I just tonight watched an old Cagney movie called “One Two Three.” 1961.
It made good fun of the differences between West and East Germany. Per the movie, this would have been East German behavior.

75 years later and they’re still dragging Anne and her family out of attic crawl space for tweeting about muslims.

German police probe apparent murder of Merkel party politician Walter Luebcke

... Mr Luebcke gave a speech in 2015 in which he advocated “Christian values” such as loving one’s neighbour, prompting at least one far-right publication to call him a “traitor” and to publish his home address.

According to the BKA, three out of four hate posts in Germany are made by right-wing extremists.

Why, naturally. And if they weren't the thought police would just tweak the definition of "hate post" a little more until they were.

And what do you know? They're raiding the homes of political opponents just like in the good old days. How unexpected.

In case anyone was wondering, yes, the EU Constitution does mention freedom of speech. With a whopping qualifier:

Article 10

2. The exercise of these freedoms, since it carries with it duties and responsibilities, may be subject to such formalities, conditions, restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society, in the interests of national security, territorial integrity or public safety, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, for the protection of the reputation or rights of others, for preventing the disclosure of information received in confidence, or for maintaining the authority and impartiality of the judiciary.

Freedom of speech is, in other words, sacrosanct except for where the state says it isn't. Isn't that comforting?

The Treaty of Lisbon made the EU Convention on Human Rights part of EU law, so that is indeed part of their constitution as it were.

The Basic Law in Germany is yet more draconian, and self-nullifying. Article 5 reads thus:
  1. Every person shall have the right freely to express and disseminate his opinions in speech, writing and pictures, and to inform himself without hindrance from generally accessible sources. Freedom of the press and freedom of reporting by means of broadcasts and films shall be guaranteed. There shall be no censorship.

  2. These rights shall find their limits in the provisions of general laws, in provisions for the protection of young persons, and in the right to personal honor.

  3. Arts and sciences, research and teaching shall be free. The freedom of teaching shall not release any person from allegiance to the constitution.
These all pattern themselves after Stalin’s USSR constitution of 1936, with the “positive liberty” format of rights with their self-nullifying caveats. Not once do such documents say that government cannot make laws abridging any freedoms (IOW the “negative liberty” format that Obama once openly vilified; nobody brought up to his face the fact that the Ten Commandments are also in negative-liberty format).

So did they knock like the Gestapo, or did they just skip that step?

That is what “hate speech” is all about; silencing the voices of those who would not see their country handed over to foreigners and their way of life destroyed/replaced.
