Way off topic, but do you remember the root beer flavor drink mix? That stuff was great
All it needs is sparkles.

I use potassium permanganate to “age” the bright white westinghouse micarta grips on my 1911A1’s . They are sold by Smith-Alexander and are a brilliant white when new.
Soak the “new” grips in a tall glass of distilled water with a few crystals of potassium permanganate that turns the water light purple.
The grips look just like “aged yellowed ivory” but 100% more durable and available / cheaper than real ivory.
PS ....... potassium permanganate crystals are carried to purify water by many special forces around the worlds versus iodine tablets. One crystal, (size of a grain of sea salt) will treat up to two quarts. I carried em in my SERE kit my entire military career , used it for decades. Still to this day in my vehicles and hunting / fishing gear.
Thats my potassium permanganate story .....
Almost as relevant: Where's Coal Grove, Ohio? Across the river from Ashland, Kentucky (Valvoline's hometown), that's where.

I did not know that. Thanks.

They don't seem to have the white anymore.
Yep, intermediate inorganic chemistry.
Better purple than have it all turn yellow.
OHIO PING!
Please let me know if you want on or off the Ohio Ping list.

I think someone tinkled in the water supply and they use the purple chemical to reveal... ewww. : )
I’ll call and check ....... worth the effort to try an find a set !
I see they have them in black.
OK ..... just called SA customer service and they said that the westinghouse white micarta was sourced out of the philippines long ago (my age) and they’re “source” didn’t have them any more ........ this was they’re grips I used . After the faux aging using potassium permanganate they really are a poorboy set of very old ivory on yer 1911A1.

Thanks!
Their grips are all great products ..... they even cut the grips 90 degrees at the bottom if you are using their main spring housing mag well. A flush fit where the grip and mag well meet.
... As custom as you can get over the counter for a good 1911. Add a new 18# recoil spring and a KKM barrel , Run a 1000 rounds through it and voila !!! I take mine to gunsite each year ..... never a problem thus far.
I turned my Norinco into a test bed to see how I’d do. New barrel, bushing, link, trigger, springs. Had to take a little off the bottom middle of the barrel to get it to slide smoothly through the bushing but it fits tight in battery. Better than the OEM parts fit. Couldn’t get the grip safety spring to work right, but the original one works fine. 18# Wilson Combat recoil spring. I don’t remember what barrel it is, but after something less than 1000 rounds it is accurate and has been very reliable. Kind of a fun project.
The Norinco frame and slide steel (recycled rail road track?) is harder than a whores heart. I may get it refinished some time but it isn’t for show, it just works.

Looks suspiciously like phenol pthaline. (a base indicator)
