Food stamp use drops; work rules cited
Atlanta journal constitution ^ | 6-11-19 | Maya T. Prabhu

Number of Ga. recipients falls 200,000 since 2018, continuing 6-year trend.

As of March 31, nearly 1.38 million Georgians were receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, commonly known as food stamps, according to figures obtained from the Department of Family and Children Services by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

That’s down from more than 1.55 million in June 2018.

That drop-off is part of a steady decline in recipients since 2013, when the number of Georgians using food stamps peaked at 1.95 million.

State employees and advocates working with poor and low-income Georgians say the decline is the result of several factors — including the institution of work requirements for people the state has identified as able-bodied adults without dependents.

The state has gradually reinstated work requirements in many urban and suburban counties over the past several years. It has led to a sharp decrease in enrollment in recent years.

The requirements are expected to be in place in all 159 of Georgia’s counties by the end of the year.

Why is there EVER, ANYWHERE in the US, NOT a work requirement???

I will ALWAYS be grateful that SSDI existed during my 5 years recovering from severe head injury.

I will ALWAYS be grateful to God for what is a semi miraculous recovery.

I will STILL believe that at least a quarter of those on SSDI don’t need to be on it.

Though it doesn’t make sense to make 1/4 of what you used to just because you are lazy!!

That’s what I was getting.

During those 5 years, 1/4 was a lot!!

Once I felt remotely better enough to work again, I waned my sports cars back!!!

Why making them work would be akin to slavery!

Greatly reduced due to work requirements... bullsh!+. Anything to avoid giving credit to the Trump requirement. Down 13% in one year ain’t from a 2013 law with work requirements.

If you don’t work you don’t eat. Read it somewhere.

Maynard was way ahead of his time.

I’m constantly hearing from local contractors that young folks show up and last only a few days. Every company I talk to here in the Idaho Panhandle says they could immediately hire 10 good people and put them to work. But they have to WORK! Not stroll in at 10 am, not yak on the cell phone. Many of them say “that’s just too hard.”

Pathetic.

“...that if any WOULD NOT work, neither should he eat.”. — Thes. 3:10

I like that, to me, it distinguishes those who aren’t able to work from those who can work but choose not to, i.e., “would not” = “I don’t wanna”.

I was getting unemloyment from NYS because my husband’s career took us to California.

After about three weeks I got a job and called the office in NY to tell them to stop my payments ‘cause I was working. They told me they had no idea how to do that — how to suspend payments; nobody had asked before. The lady joked that I should keep the money because I was so honest.

So I sent a registered letter exaining the situation (to cover my ass for the future if necessary). Never got a response, and received about eight more payments. Didn’t cash them. Weird.

I’d like to know what happened to those on welfare who got a job in order to get food stamps. Did they get a job that could support them/family? Did they get a good job or advancement later on?

Did they get off of welfare entirely (other than medical needs)? I have no qualms about helping sick people who can’t financial take care of themselves.

Did they regain their sense of worth because they were working instead of mooching? Did it help their family to stay together?

Lots of unanswered questions here.
