A ventriloquist on the radio...

Was there some announcer who would tell the listener if his lips were moving?

A ventriloquist on the radio...

I used to tell my students about this...only the brightest saw the humor. But Bergen and his characters were so well known from the movies, that visualizing the skits was not a problem for the radio audience. Of course there was a studio audience and I imagine that Bergen basically did his stage act and moved his lips as little as possible.

It was a running joke that Edgar Bergen moved his lips as Charlie McCarthy spoke. Most of the other radio comedians of the time made some sort of comment on this idiosyncrasy.

Charlie was Candice Bergen’s big brother, and got a LOT more attention from Daddy.
