Muhammad Ali Jinnah was an atheist and the original Pakistani constitution was secular.
Back when I was living in NoVA I had a friend whose neighbors were a family of Pakistani origin but long time residents and US citizens. The grandfather living with them was a WWII vet of the British later Pakistan Army. (He reminded me of the “Brigadier” on the UK comedy “To the Manor Born”, accent was very upper class English! I think he even retired as a brigadier.) Loved talking about his life as a UK Indian Army officer. Clearly had tremendous pride in his service as a soldier of the Raj in the British Army.
Long dead not but a fascinating example of living history and maybe what might have been,
What boots?? I don't see any boots.
Mustafa Kemal had some contradictions. he was determined to Westernize and Modernize Turkiye and he largely succeeded for a time but he was also determined that the State of Turkiye remain - actually become- a totally Moslem country.
Absolutely true!
And the slam-dunk of that fact is another monumental Islamic event that occurred 2-weeks after the Shia radicals seizure of the American Consulate in Tehran on 11/4/79.
Not to allow the lead in the Jihadi crusade to be taken by Shia, Sunni radicals seized the Grand Mosque in Mecca on 11/20/79.
And the peanut farmer from Georgia leading his surrender-on-all-fronts party of Democrats reignited a dormant Islamic fundamentalism across both Shia & Sunni.
Good catch!
I had forgotten about those.
I might even go back a little further.
The 1956 Suez Crisis - last time the Europe acted like Europe. UK & France dropped paratroops on the Suez Canal, and took it back. Israel smashed (as usual!) the Egyptian Army. Ike backed the wrong horse! Backed the Arabs because of threatened Soviet involvement. We should have just ignored most of it and basically told the Soviets to butt out too. We made no friends by backing the Arabs and did no good by separating the antagonists! Just set the stage for 1967, 1973, etc. Then Carter, cowardly Europeans and here we are!
You never win by acting weak! Acting reasonable is acting weak in that part of the world. Strength & force is the only currency understood there & in the 3rd World. (or really anywhere! Check history!)
Bin Ladin even said that!
