As a superpower, the US can use its economic strength and cultural appeal to undermine the Iranian regime while using defensive military power to contain Iran. Eventually, as the mullahs die off and are replaced by pro-Western young Iranians, the character of the regime will change, either at the ballot box or by coup or revolution. This seems to be what Trump intends.
