One day before the Fourth of July, United States women's national team forward Megan Rapinoe offered her thoughts on what it means to be an American.
Rapinoe, who did not play Tuesday because of a hamstring injury as the U.S. advanced to the Women's World Cup final by defeating England 2-1, reiterated that she expects to be available for Sunday's game in Lyon against either the Netherlands or Sweden.
But a player who has been in the spotlight throughout this tournament, on and off the field, had more to say when asked to respond to critics who say her words or actions are anti-American.
"I think that I'm particularly and uniquely and very deeply American," Rapinoe said. "If we want to talk about the ideals that we stand for, all the songs and the anthem and sort of what we were founded on, I think I'm extremely American."

Really? Do you believe in religious freedom? Limited government? Gun rights? Free speech (including “hate speech”)?
Or do you just think being an American means you’re free to be gay and others have to kowtow to your beliefs and pay for it?
Because if you’re the latter you’re not an American.
This is one sick woman (man) (it). Who cares what you think Rapinoe? The lady that took your spot in the lineup did fantastic. With younger legs than yours you are not needed in the finals.
She’s a jerk and I’m glad she was benched. I seriously think that she hates the US - which has given her everything - so much that she would have tried to throw the game.
Exactly. I keep getting lectures about supporting “America’s team”. But I am 100% confident that the vast majority of the team would only have disgust for me as a white male christian straight man, who owns guns and voted for Trump.
So why should I root for them?
You forgot on foreign soil while reresenting the U.S.
For her the flag is a branding “prop”. It could just as easily be Subaru flag, or a Whole Foods corporate sponsorship banner.
