Good evening, ML...((HUGS))...record high here yesterday and fires rage.

Thinking of getting a kiddy pool for the feet out on the deck.

You and Penny tried out your new hiking boots?

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HAROLD ARLEN

ST. LOUIS WOMAN

Harold and Johnny Mercer’s next project was a Broadway musical, “St. Louis Woman.” The show opened in 1946 but was not well received. Ironically, over time it has been rated as their masterpiece. After only 113 performances, the show closed, and Harold and Johnny returned to California.

”COME RAIN OR COME SHINE”

This classic tune came out of a single evening’s work in October 1945. Johnny had come over to Arlen’s house and remained in the study while Harold went into the living room and “toyed around with an idea.” When Harold played the tune for Johnny, he liked it and even came up with a fitting opening line, “I’m gonna love you like nobody’s loved you,” after which he paused for a moment. Into the brief silence Arlen jokingly injected, “Come hell or high water,” to which Mercer reacted by saying, “Of course, why didn’t I think of that – ‘Come rain or come shine.’” (You couldn’t say “hell” on the radio.) Before Johnny went home that night, the song was complete.

This is early Sassy from 1950. This is a small club take on the song.

It’s really too hot for hiking, so Penny is enjoying our air conditioned bedroom. There will be plenty of nice days later in the summer, but right now, it’s really HOT around here. (No fires though, thank God!)

OK...I had an interesting motorcycle ride tonight. I was riding down a nice country road with a pond on one side, and houses on the other. One of the houses had a tent set up for a kid’s party. There was a pony on a long rope trotting around in a circle.

Suddenly, the pony bolted and started heading for ME. I could not swerve because of the lake on my left. In just the nick of time the handler wrangled to pony into the circular path.

Can you imagine if the pony had collided with me? We probably both would have been killed...in front of twenty little kids.

I can’t even ponder the trauma...

So now I have this to add to my “Biker Tales”.
