I have family in Philadelphia. I was shocked at how different the east coast is, as compared to the west coast. Here, in the SF Bay Area, we are "diversified", meaning there's a cosmopolitan mix of people in many places.
In Philadelphia, it seemed that large areas were either all white, or all black. Not much mixing that I saw. That was an eye-opener to me. (To be fair about the east coast, NYC is cosmopolitan in Manhattan but I didn't much explore other outlying areas.)
