I think he had to resign. He was a distraction to the POTUS and the honorable thing to do was to step out of the way. As he said let the focus fall on the pedophile where it belongs and not allow POTUS to be a target of media for something done a decade ago.

I don’t know all the legal angles here either, but I would guess that Acosta stepping down also allows for an easier and more thorough investigation into the entire matter including the plea deal he signed on to. What was this “intel” thing and how was it conveyed by whom and why? While an investigation should proceed whether he was in the Cabinet or not, with him out there is no conflict of interest in attempting to interview a sitting Cabinet member. Now he is free to be an open book and there would be no time or investigative constraints related to executive privilege.

I have my suspicions that the re-airing of this case might have been orchestrated by allies of Trump. In that view Acosta was a necessary casualty in the war against Trump’s opponents. At the very least it should cause to dispirit Democrat momentum, raise levels of disgust, and spotlight hypocrisy. At the worst it will directly implicate many Dem “faves” as Pelosi’s daughter tweeted. Weinstein, Epstein both strongly tied to influential Democrat - so who knew what when? In both examples, very prominent people on the left knew all about their predilections and chose to cover it up and take their money.
