FDR was wrong, once again. The Tories would not have left in 1776 when the British were still very much in control. They would have felt more compelled to leave in 1783 when the Revolution was over and the peace treaty had been signed.

In 1936 Al smith and Norman Thomas both accused FDR of being a socialist.

Thomas was the leading socialist of America and Smith was a largely forgotten democratic leader at the time.
