San Francisco and Seattle: A tale of two cities mired in a homeless crisis

San Francisco and Seattle share many common threads. Both are politically progressive cities mired in a homeless crisis flanked by a growing unsheltered population experiencing drug addiction and mental illness.

Each city is looking at the other for solutions.

The leadership of each city is has been criticized for not having a plan that works, for not reducing the number of unsheltered homeless, for not getting people into housing, not getting people into drug abuse and mental illness treatment and all without breaking the bank.

Despite increased incremental spending of tens of millions of dollars each year, San Francisco leaders were shocked when results of this year’s one night count of the city’s homeless went up 30 percent from just 2 years ago.

Both cities run by white woke progressives. Tenderloin has always been a rough area but to image it is even worse is hard to believe. SOMA, South of Market, was attempting to be a hip place with bars and like but looks like the homeless have taken over.

They are mired in a Democrat caused and run crisis.
They have neither the brains nor the courage to deal with the homeless in any manner save for bending over and assuming the “do me now” position to any potential welfare voter that slithers along.

Elect progressive democrats and EVERY city will become a hellhole... Progressive ideas SOUND good but the incentives are straight out of hell.

When you subsidize something, like homelessness, you get more of it.

The more money they spend, the more homelessness they’ll get.

Seems to be working as expected.

It is not a “homeless” crisis. It is foremost a drug addiction problem and secondarily a mental health crisis.

You can add Los Angeles, which is not better.

Catering to the homeless is more important, than taking care of the law abiding, tax-paying people.

New York City actually had the answer to the problem when Guiliani was mayor....the “broken window syndrome”. ENFORCE THE LAWS...ALL THE LAWS...AND JAIL THE PERPETRATORS. Of course, when the Progressives took over again, they rejected the approach, and he solution was lost. But it is/was a rare case of an actual social experiment that was tested in the real world and found to work.

NIMBY Land Use Nazis create Homelessness.
Every time.

Greenways and No-Development tax evasions are schemes so that those that have can surround themselves with open space they no longer have to pay for while their lot skyrockets in value.

Low rent neighborhoods serve a purpose. You may not want to live there, but some folks need to, at least for a while as they move up the ladder.

You remember that crappy apartment you had in college with the crazy landlord? We’ll for some folks that’s all they can afford while they continue up the ladder.

South Beach used to be one of G_d’s waiting rooms, before it became hip. Brooklyn went up, then way way down, now its back up again. Lots of San Fran was ghetto heaven for DECADES. Portland was a shiitehole for ever, now glamorous? Remember “An Officer and a Gentleman” and the Puget Sound Debs? Yep. Seattle was a blue collar town, not quite ready for prime time.

In my neck of the woods, formerly ready for development with pleasant affordable single family home tracts, in a commuter ring of a booming second tier city gets spiked by the Local Land Use Nazis. Now, 5 acres is a building lot.

Poor folks have to live somewhere too. Get rid of the Homeless Vermin, police the places so they are safe for people to live and work. Live and Let Live.

If apartments rent for $2,000-$3,000/month in an area, many people are not going to be able to afford them.

To be fair to people who work damn hard to pay such rents, those who can’t have to live elsewhere.

When I visited Seattle about 8 years ago, a homeless camp of about a square block under a freeway was just cleared out.

What I suggest is that places with homeless problems raise alcohol and pot tax rates sky high.

Well, I never thought I'd be for banning plastic straws util I read this about cleaning the streets if syringes

“That’s why you don’t see syringes on the ground,” he says. “Since the city banned plastic straws, the addicts are using syringes as pipes."

I had to check if “KOMO” was a SF radio or TV station.
It works for Seattle too.

And the mayor of Austin is jumping up and down in the background waving his arms and whining, “Me too! Show me how y’all did it!”

KOMO is a landmark Seattle TV and radio station. They used to be family owned but were recently purchased by Sinclair Broadcasting. This has moved them -grudgingly - to the right (still not center).

They produced a 1 hour documentary "Seattle is Dying" about the decline if what was a very lovely city that is rocking the boat of the progressive government. It's been seen over 4.5M times on YouTube. I've attached a link

Here in Seattle they like to give the low income housing to illegals. For example, one Somali family I know of, a 60 year old guy with ten kids, rents a four-bedroom apartment for $200.00

I suspect that San Francisco also gives the cheap rent places to the illegals.

SF and Seattle:
“If only we could have progressive socialist leadership here.”

“You do.”

“Oh, yeah, forgot. Well then it’s Trump’s fault.”

Glad to here this!
Any station which would air “Seattle is dying” is good enough for me.
