3:54 DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — High school classmates of the gunman who killed nine people early Sunday in Dayton, Ohio, say he was suspended for compiling a “hit list” of those he wanted to kill and a “rape list” of girls he wanted to sexually assault.

I am of the opinion that taking away the rights of citizens should ONLY happen AFTER that person has been given the chance in a court of law to refute any allegations of mental incompetence.

So called “Red Flag” laws reverse that model by first taking away guns and then requiring the citizen to fight and carry the cost of proving that they are sane and responsible.

So imagine Antifa wanting to have a nice little riot downtown. Set up a bunch of fake red flag calls and get private citizens guns taken away. Then go have a riot at their house. Citizens are now unable to defend themselves. That scenario alone should convince you.

As I understand it, a “red flag” law would be designed to prohibit a-holes like this from buying guns. I’m not clear why that’s a bad idea. Convince me

This is soviet in the extreme. Do you own a gun? Having any crazy leftist relatives or neighbors you have argued with? Guess what - they can report you, and basis this law, cops can investigate you or potentially deprive you of several of your basic rights - with no crime having been committed whatsoever.

Still waiting to hear when this guy was put on Ritalin and other anti-depressants. Crickets from the media about if he was mentally ill or being treated for mental illness. I suspect he was, but no reports so far. It is the first thing I would ALWAYS check in a mass shooting. The very first thing. Check his medical for mental illness. I don’t care if it was just Ritalin for ADD in Junior High. First thing I would check.

So, whoever ignored this, facilitated his behavior, didn’t see him charged and locked up,

Is there a law against ‘making lists’? His classmates likely rightly remember that he was a bit ‘off’ and probably talked about those crossed him and those he found attractive were on some ‘lists’ he had. I don’t think he’s going to jail for something like that. He may be referred to a counselor, who may, if he or she thinks it’s serious pass the word on.

I had a jr high student who was an odd lad, whose parents gave him lots of guns to mess with and who ‘made lists’. Of course we passed the word. He was in counseling, but he also was in school. At some point he was diagnosed as having Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD) and thus the school had to jump through extra hoops to discipline him for anything. We were all afraid that he would show up with his AR-15—yes, he had one—and shoot up the school. He still may sometime.

As far as I am aware, he’s not been arrested, has no record, and if he has the money can legally buy a gun anywhere.

There are a lot of video playing, lonely losers who can’t get a girl that are walking powder kegs.

So, whoever ignored this, facilitated his behavior, didn’t see him charged and locked up, have blood on their hands. They share responsibility.

Trump didn’t speak up about him, so clearly Trump is to blame.

How would red flag laws have prevented this shooting? I am not knowledgeable about them. Do they flag every person threatening to commit suicide? Do they flag every person who makes a threat - sincere or idle? Do they flag every person who is notified about formally or informally, or just flag the people who a Doctor, judge, or police officer deems to be a danger to themselves and others?

I don’t understand how they identify the people who are a genuine danger to themselves or others, and all the crackpots just mouthing off. This sounds like it is ripe for abuse. Every wife can call the local PD and say her husband/son is a danger to himself, and POOF their guns are gone.

If you make lists of people to kill or rape, yes, that should be actionable and have consequences. Counseling, maybe first time, but continues, something more serious. If nothing else, how about a restraining order? At least that gets it on legal record, then deny guns.

As I understand it, a “red flag” law would be designed to prohibit YOU from owning a weapon. Tyrants love the power to arbitrarily seize peoples' property and to imprison them. "Mental health" is a great excuse for doing it; the USSR perfected the technique.

I had the misfortune of encountering a serial killer.

His name was Wayne Nance.

There were a series of murders in my little town of Missoula, MT.

They finally got a description of the guy.....red hair, black glasses, acne.

Wayne bragged to my girlfriend that he had committed the murders.

She told me.

I told her to turn him in.

He fit the description.

The police came and hauled Wayne off.

He passed a lie detector test and was back in school the next day.

The police had him and let him go.

He committed more murders.

I braced him in the hallway and told him to stay away from my girlfriend.

A guy wrote a book about old Wayne. The last chapter he wrote was about a psychologist he’d talked to about Wayne.

The psychologist said Wayne really wanted to kill the boyfriends/husbands.

I often wish that I could have made old Wayne pull that big Bowie knife on me in that hallway.

The son of a bitch might have died sooner.

They do not put people into mental hospitals today like they use to do in the sixties and before.

In the 1080’s while Reagan was president, the left sued and was successful in making the mental asylums release anyone sane enough to ask to be released. THen the left blamed Reagan for the homelessness problem that resulted when the insane were released.

It would be nice if it happened, but I wouldn’t count on it. Think of all of the bad things that are actually going on in schools today. And although I hope it is no longer in effect, the “stop the school to prison pipeline” was an official D.O.E. directive to schools. A kid making lists is worrisome, no doubt and should be looked into, but there are worse things going on.

Schools, especially are in a tough spot. Staff in most states are mandated reporters. If abuse or neglect is suspected, they are required to report it. But there are also strict confidentiality rules in effect as well. If Timmy has your daughter’s name on his rape list, I legally can’t tell you. If you suspect and ask me, I can’t tell you. We can’t be violating Timmy’s right to privacy. And no, we can’t be looking at Timmy’s phone either. Timmy has rights.

We had a elementary kid who was caught fondling a kindergartener in a bathroom. He was suspended for a brief time, sent to counseling and returned to school. None of the staff were informed and those who knew of it were ordered to say nothing of it. A few years later the same kid, now in jr high did it again. Had we known we’d have never let him be in the elementary building unsupervised—hell, we’d’ve watched like a hawk. But we weren’t told. After the second incident he was expelled—but there shouldn’t have been a second time.

People that are old like me will remember when it was a very real thing to be put in a mental institution against your will. Now they did have a pretty high bar for admission. You couldn't just have an angry ex-girlfriend get back at you by having you committed for being "crazy". You had to be bona fide crazy to get committed to one.

We also had virtually no homeless problem in those days. You couldn't just decide to be a vagrant. In those days, cops would vacuum these folks right off the streets at night and take them to shelter, where they would likely be subject to psychiatric evaluation. Many of them ended up in the institutions, others got released to a family member and others just straightened themselves out. But being homeless and just sleeping on the streets was just not allowed in our society. At least not on a significant scale.

The book and movie "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" started the movement to clean out our institutions and we are living with the results of that today. Were conditions at an institution similar to those depicted in OFOTCN? Perhaps. But the solution would have been to improve the institutions and gear them more towards treating and releasing people on merit as opposed to keeping them locked up - not to just open the doors and let everybody walk free.

Those released should be able to care for themselves, but the law does not care and they end up on the street.

Sounds great on paper... the problem comes when one political group believes that their opposition should be labeled mental cases. The old USSR and all commie countries/ hellholes have used the ‘mental institution’ trick to imprison opposition.

All it takes is thinking the wrong thoughts... which is defined by the ‘elites’ in charge. Totalitarians love thought crimes.

I heard a liberal on MSNBC a month back making the case that ‘thinking about robbing a bank was the same as robbing a bank’... It's not.

Our culture's falling apart - there's been a spiritual flood - culture sign posts have been washed away. I feel it's been intentional - the disaster manipulated by liberal elites...and that the situation won't get better by government thugs applying more and more force. Yes, if there's proof a person's going off the rails, families, classmates etc should have a place to seek help. But if this killing spree stuff keeps happening - and it will - then we've got to go deeper, find the toxic incentives and pull them out.
