Universal Background Checks establish a defacto gun registry. The eliminate private sales altogether.

The left would LOVE to have a database of who owned what. Combined with red flag laws it would give them a list of targets to harass or ‘start with’ should they ever get froggy and the balloon go up.

That’s why they want private sales, that’s the key.

While I am opposed to it and think it is intended to ultimately lead to a registry, the bill passed by the House doesn’t establish any database or registry. It simply requires all transfers, with narrow exceptions, to be made through an FFL, who then handles the transfer the same way he does under current law.

There is no government database of retail gun sales under current law. Records of a passed NICS check must be destroyed 24 hours later, and only records of failed NICS checks may be retained by law. Also, no information on what was transferred or even whether the transfer ultimately occurred is provided to the government. The only record of the transfer is the hard-copy Form 4473 retained by the FFL, which, unless they change it, does not include the transferor’s identity. Thus, the only records would be hard copies spread out among thousands of FFLs.

Again, I’m opposed to it in part because I think it is intended to lead to a registry, but I don’t want anyone losing arguments with anti-gunners due to incorrect information.
