Acres of saltwater pools in the desert are growing an algae food revolution

“Algae? But... isn’t that gross?” That’s what Rebecca White commonly hears from surprised people at her booth at trade shows, after the unsuspecting visitors find out the snack bar they just ate, and actually really liked, contains algae.

White is a research scientist at iWi, a nutrition company that runs one of the largest algae farms. She isn’t offering snacks filled with algae just to show people that the mossy greens can be added to food without making it taste or smell like pond water. The real mission is to discuss algae’s potential as a solution for a much bigger problem: the food security of our planet.

We will soon be running out of food. The projected population of the world in 2050 will require a 70 percent increase in food production, but we are already stretching our resources with the way we grow food today, a new United Nations report warned yesterday. Land is turning into desert, rising temperatures are cutting crop yields, and soil is becoming lifeless due to overuse. Seventy percent of the world’s available freshwater is used for agriculture and raising livestock. Livestock and the food they consume generate 14 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions from human-related activity, contributing to climate change, more droughts and land erosions. It’s a vicious cycle that experts say we are running out of time to break. “We need a farming revolution,” says Miguel Calatayud, the CEO of iWi.

Awesomeness eh? The u.n. says we'll be running out of food soon and the world will require a 70% increase in food production in 30 years. 70%? WOW! It's much more worser than I would have thought. No problem though. The evil 'pph' plans to step up abortion activities with tax dollars so we should be okay. Or, we can look at it another way. If price charles is right, we only have 18 +/- months left. If 'aoc' is right, about 11 +/- years so.......

There is always the soylent green solution, for those that believe the UN and leftists when it comes to science, and well, anything.

Uh, perhaps someone should keep an eye on ‘pph’ to see how they’re disposing of their, uh, bothersome tissue masses?

“You mean soylent green is algae?????”

would love to see a cartoon of an anthropomorphic algae character which sort of looks like Charlton Heston standing up and screaming, “SOYLENT GREEN IS ALGAE!”, while in the background a bunch of dead algae characters are being fed on a conveyor belt into a soylent green factory ...

Someone around here makes good money selling this stuff (grows naturally, not farmed):

Didn’t this awesome ‘prediction’ appear 40-50 years ago? Must be time to recycle the fear, else the grant money is now too large to resist.

Algae seaweed has been a common food in Asian countries for a long time (Nori Sushi wrappers in Japan). Algae, just another species is all. But I hope there are no tax dollars being spent here to try and make me a Vegan because they will be wasted.

Oh BS. Plenty of land to grow food and livestock. Farming can be creative and adaptable to various environments. Poor nations are often run by corrupt, inept governments causing poverty and increased ignorance. Leftist hacks who want to live on algae and insects well then have at it.
Leave the rest of us carnivores and farm raised veggie eaters alone.

Algae is bad for the environment also, in fact it is bad for it’s own local environment and living conditions.

Probably a lot of these “scientists” keep their sleep masks on when flying to ‘save muvver erf’ meetings and don’t look out the plane windows. There’s still an acre or two to grow stuff. Besides, with the warming, we can simply move some of the crops north since the end of snow is at hand. Well except where it isn’t. Still snow in the Sierras this morning. And low 40’s in the Tahoe basin this morning.

“The real mission is to discuss algae’s potential as a solution for a much bigger problem: the food security of our planet.”

“Food insecurity” - another crisis for the easily manipulated delusionals, in a planet where obesity is rampant.

Okay. Now I’m offended. There was a scene of the racis’ Besy Ross flag being raised. How thoughtless of whoever made the animated piece. LOL!
