Trump says he delayed tariffs because of concerns over Christmas shopping season

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he is delaying some tariffs on Chinese imports ahead of the Christmas season to stem their potential impact on holiday shopping.

The Trump administration announced hours earlier that it would delay until Dec. 15 some of the tariffs that were originally scheduled to come into effect Sept. 1.

“We’re doing this for the Christmas season,” Trump told reporters on an airport tarmac around noon Tuesday. “Just in case some of the tariffs would have an impact on U.S. customers.”

“But so far they’ve had virtually none,” the president added. “But just in case they might have an impact on people, what we’ve done is we’ve delayed it, so that they won’t be relevant to the Christmas shopping season.”

The acknowledgement that tariffs could harm holiday sales marks a shift for Trump, a self-described “tariff man” who has long claimed that the taxes on imports help the U.S. while applying pressure on China.

The U.S. trade representative said the delay would apply to a wide variety of goods, including certain electronics such as cellphones, laptops and video games.

A slew of Christmas-related products also appeared on the delay list. They include decorations for “Christmas festivities, nativity scenes and figures thereof,” Christmas tree lights and ornaments.

No other items for specific holidays appear to be included in the delay list.

Retail sales and stock valuations apparently outweigh national security.

Because everyone wants to buy ChiCom stuff for others at Christmas. I know I’ve gotten picky.

I think he delayed it to temporarily relieve some of the pressure on Beijing so it doesn’t rashly go into Hong Kong.

I think he’s just toying with the chinks at this point! He’s proved he has their number as they put themselves in a disadvantageous position as they never foresaw him becoming big Kahuna! Must suck to be them. Happy Konica poor commies!

Well, he certainly keeps the Chinese befuddled... not knowing what to expect next and when. The uncertainty disrupts their ability to plan rationally.

I never thought of that angle. But the HK protesters are really goading the Chicoms in Beijing to do something.

Taking over the airport and paralyzing the city’s business and economy could be the last straw...

yeah...Shutting down HK airport is going way too far! Now the ChiComs will have to act. It will get ugly unless someone in the leadership of that city takes drastic action. The smartest thing they could do IMO is to call Trump and have him help them make some kind of deal!

POTUS is looking like a candy ass with the Chicoms on Tarif’s and now they’re moving troops into Hong Kong outskirts.

I disagree. I think he’s tweaking them. They know he’ll do the tariffs...it’s all about control! Don’t doubt me!

I worked in the retail industry for years.

You don’t know how insane people can get with things on their Christmas list are not available. One year a guy wanted to rip my head off because we ran out of stock on Tickle Me Elmo.
I ruined his child’s Christmas apparently.

Trump is probably looking ahead to the political fallout of such things.
