China won't let U.S. Navy ship dock in Hong Kong amid trade tensions

HONG KONG — China has denied a request for a U.S. warship to visit Hong Kong, American officials said Tuesday.

The incident came amid rising tensions between Beijing and Washington over tariffs and follows the U.S. last week imposing sanctions on China after it bought arms from Russia.

The USS Wasp, an amphibious assault ship, had been due to make a port call in the former British colony of Hong Kong in October, diplomatic sources told Reuters.

"The Chinese government did not approve a request for a U.S. port visit to Hong Kong by the USS Wasp," a spokeswoman for the U.S. consulate in the city said.

"We have a long track record of successful port visits to Hong Kong, and we expect that to continue," she added.

In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang did not directly answer a question on whether China had denied the request.

"For requests for U.S. military ships to visit Hong Kong, China has always carried out approvals case by case, in accordance with the principle of sovereignty and the detailed situation," he told reporters, without elaborating.

True - but wasn’t it a pretty bad ‘turn over’ deal?

China gave Hong Kong some autonomy at first, but told them it was temporary. And it was.

That took some balls to ask for a port visit for an Amphib full of Marines in the middle of this. Sheer panic on the Chinese side thinking that we might intervene because that is what they would do. Even having a group afloat in the neighborhood will make them look over their shoulder. I like it.

“On June 9, 1898, the British under Queen Victoria brokered a 99-year lease agreement for the use of Hong Kong after China lost a series of wars fought over the British trade in tea and opium.”

It’s more like Britain took away Hong Kong for a century than that the UK ‘gave away Hong Kong to Chicom scum.’

In 1947, but in 1997 modified...worked out a 50 year one nation (China) - Two system of govt (one free- other tyranny - China - for 50 years til 2047). Looks like that contract maybe ending early!

It’s going to be a blood bath...

According to Wiki, there were 60,000 American citizens living in Hong Kong as of 2009. That's more than British expats. Also, 1,100 American companies employ 10% of the Hong Kong workforce.

Seems to me we have some obligation to use leverage here to protect these people, short of war. I trust that Trump understands all of this.

Hong Kong doesn’t have a chance do they? Are residents allowed to leave?

Then if the ChiComs attack Hong Kong the removal of the basis will be a tit-for-tat response and will be much easier to defend politically

If the US government arrests Brennan, Clapper, Jarrett, Lynch, and Holder, would China bombing a US island possession be a "tit-for-tat response"?

Wasn’t very clear. I do agree we have no obligation to Chinese citizens. The thousands of Americans living there are another story.

Hong Kong doesn’t have a chance do they?

I'd say they don't have a choice.

Are residents allowed to leave?

Yes. About twenty-five thousand a year leave, but it's likely to be higher now.

The forces that were seen moving into nearby Shenzhen were PAP - Peoples Armed Police. The PLA is quiet at the moment. PAP forces will go in first.

“No. The Brits had a 99 Yr lease on HK that expired.”

No.

Hong Kong and Kowloon were ceded forever in early 1800’s.

The 99 year lease was for New Territories, made in 1898.

It was a lease from an extinct imperial dynasty.

Best thing the U.S. can do is have massive surveillance coverage via drones, planes and satellites of HK over the next 72 hours.
