What Will California Ban Next?
The Wall Street Journal ^ | August 18, 2019 | Andy Kessler

Posted on 08/20/2019 4:32:24 PM PDT by KingofZion

First they came for our plastic grocery bags. Then they came for our plastic straws. Now they’ve come for our plastic water bottles at SFO. Yes, you read that right. Starting Tuesday, the sale of plastic water bottles will be banned at San Francisco International Airport, one of the few places they actually make sense. California has many dumb laws and statutes and bans, but this one is especially brainless—spurred by futile self-righteousness.

After running late for your flight after a 30-minute security line only to have TSA confiscate your Fiji water bottle, you’ll now have to stop at a crowded water fountain to fill your own metal flask. Or buy an overpriced glass or aluminum bottle at the concession stand, paying another 10 cents for a bag. And your teeth will chatter if you drink through a paper straw. Of course you could risk dehydration instead: Men lose up to a half-gallon of water during a 10-hour flight. Oddly, you can still buy sugary drinks in plastic bottles at SFO; only healthy, calorie-free water is banned in plastic. You can’t make this stuff up.

Other fields are even worse. Starting next year, the California Building Standards Commission will require every new home to have solar panels. This will add $8,400 to the average cost of the state’s already expensive homes. With a shortage of about 1.4 million housing units, according to the California Housing Partnership, that’s a $12 billion unfunded mandate. ***

There’s more. Proposition 64, passed in 2016, allows Californians to grow six pot plants at home. Why not seven? And there is still no measurable legal limit for driving while stoned. When hungry, you can bring your dog to restaurants. Since 2015 no one can stop you. ***

the once-great Snake of Californication has already effectively banned the R party from many election ballots

(not that it really matters, given the kiss-arse country-club useless candidates that the state’s GOP bosses have so often nominated)

Best of luck to you, but I intend to stay here and try to use what little influence I have to make California a more reasonable state. We frequently criticize the Mexicans and Central Americans for not staying and fixing their home countries. I don’t see how this is any different. I have lived in California my whole life and I intend to die here, moonbats or no moonbats.

Cancer is a “progressive” disease. It can be stopped ... bot only through annihilation.

They will ban the picture of the state because it looks like a high capacity gun magazine.

They banned freedom and sanity in 2019; all remnants have been removed.

We were looking at St. George, like everyone else right now, but my son announced he and his girlfriend intend to marry next year then relocate to the Dallas area. Looks like I’ll be moving to Texas.

Maybe they should start by banning poop.

No, they'll tax it. Every poop flush will be $1. They'll set up a department to give free passes to low income and illegals, staffed by hundreds of people. Then higher income people will be hit with a fee to pay for cleaning up poop done by homeless people. Isn't government wonderful!

That’s kind of where I came out. Some things surprise me though, like I’ve read online guides that say Couer d’Alene is a high crime area. Not sure why, although a couple of things say it’s now full of Californicators.

Rat poison. Rat poison is bad for bobcats and mountain lions. I as surprised that it has not been banned already. They are seriously talking about this in Sacramento.

I saw this on TV and the Airport official said ‘there will be ample free, clean water on the other side of Security. The passengers can bring their own reusable water receptacles to refill’. HUH?? We aren’t allowed to bring ANY CONTAINER OVER 3 OUNCES WITH US TO FLY!! What are we supposed to refill???

Well since they have been detecting bubonic plague in fleas on rats around LA it makes perfect Progressive sense to ban rat poison at this time.

Don’t come to Idaho. It is getting way too crowded. Too many Californians moving in and bringing their liberal ideas with them.

There is nothing here. Just life threatening mountains, wild animals, free flowing rivers, and rural people with guns, God forbid.

No don’t even think of moving to Idaho. /sar

Starting next year, the California Building Standards Commission will require every new home to have solar panels. This will add $8,400 to the average cost of the state’s already expensive homes

/////

$8,400 right, in your dreams....that’s the number the legislators and their bureaucrats pushed out....

/////

but let’s not forget that this comes after the State required every new home or extensive remodel to have fire sprinkler systems installed

how much does that cost? well, first, if you have a regular water meter (5/8”) it will not deliver the necessary flow, and you must upgrade it to 1”. Then, if you have a normal water supply pipe (1/2” or 3/4”) you will need to upgrade it to .... wait .... 1 1/4” sch 40 pvc to get the necessary flow ... but wait .... there’s more

this comes along shortly after the decision was made to change the required proximity to a fire hydrant from 750 feet to 300 feet. so about 1/2 of all the properties need to upgrade their proximity to a fire hydrant.... but, you get to choose....a) install a new fire hydrant, or, b) a 3500 gallon tank, within 10 feet of the street, with anti-siphon valves, level indicators, automatic filling devices, and a yearly inspection, and of course a certified fire hose bib...and the best part, that water is not yours....you cannot use it....it must remain in that tank....

or, you can go with a new fire hydrant, installed by the local water company using their crews or subcontracted ones.

what does it cost? I am building a 672 square foot studio on a one acre lot. the fire sprinkler contractor bid 1700 about a year ago for this (probably will be more now that i am ready for the install) to pipe the interior and put the required bells and whistles on it, and I chose the hydrant option which was $12,753 ..(for hydrant and new meter).. so its about $14,500 for the package....divided by 672 square feet....$21.58 per square foot

if i had chosen to have the 3500 gallon tank in my front yard...it might have cost about $8,000 installed and hooked up.

to put this in some perspective, the roof will be $4,000

the fire system compliance is by far the most expensive element of the construction

i wanted to build a small place, that i could afford

if i cannot get it done in a timely manner, and lose this permit, i can get another one for about $800, but it would now require the new solar electric mandate, as the permit process would push me past Jan 1, 2020

how can you argue with this. fire safety is a worthy goal. but it makes low income housing even more impossible.

btw the solar requirement is something like this (if i get it correct) the house must be energy neutral. it will require electric generating capacity and energy conservation methods which, when combined, will prove on paper that the house is “energy neutral.” the house will have to generate and save energy to satisfy the bureaucrats that it will not require the electric grid to add or use capacity to service the house.

so, you will need to hire special engineers, who have special software, to determine exactly how to do this. It will be a lot easier if you don’t want windows, or have 4 feet of dirt on your roof. but you will have to pay for this determination. and that is another expense.

no one of low or middle class will be able to have a house, or a condo, not that they can now anyway....

i can’t understand why California is losing the middle class, can you?
