Sony, Harley-Davidson, Others Move Production from China to Thailand
IndustryWeek ^ | 8/19/2019 | Bloomberg

Thai officials glimpse a silver lining in the U.S.-China trade war as companies such as Sony Corp. move production to Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy. At least 10 firms are in the process of relocating some production to Thailand from China, according to the National Economic & Social Development Council. More than a dozen others could potentially choose Thailand, it said in a statement.

“We may not see the impact on the economy now, but in the second half of 2019, it could become a positive factor for growth,” the agency’s Deputy Secretary-General Wichayayuth Boonchit said Monday.

Trade tension is sapping growth in Asia’s export-dependent economies, sparking calls for looser monetary and fiscal policies. Nations such as Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand are also vying to lure investment from manufacturers seeking to escape U.S. tariffs on imports from China.

The 10 firms moving some manufacturing to Thailand include Sony, Sharp Corp., Harley-Davidson Inc. and Delta Electronics Inc. Most have finalized locations near Bangkok or in the Eastern Economic Corridor development zone on the east coast of Thailand, according to the economic and social development agency.

Earlier Monday, the agency said the country’s gross domestic product rose 2.3% in the second quarter from a year earlier, the slowest pace in almost five years, as the U.S.-China spat took its toll.

It’s amazing to me that standing up a new factory, hiring workers, training, quality control, distribution networks, and everything else in a new country is STILL considerably cheaper than just making your product in the USA.

When they move the production to South Succotash, Alabama we can call it “winning”.

Until then, it’s just more aliens doing the jobs Americans should be doing.

I think you overlook the primary issue. The Harley factory will be producing product for the Asian markets.

The asian markets for cycles dwarfs the American market. The competitors are Asian So production must be in Asia where not only are production costs lower, but also the supply chain logistics.

There is much more at stake here than American jobs

All products produced by China should be banned from being sold in America.

You over look the most important consideration.

Americans like products from China

“Until then, it’s just more aliens doing the jobs Americans should be doing.”

And the ones that didn’t get a job in the Harley plant move here and bring their entire village with them.

I agree 100% and I would rather they move back to the USA.

A huge share of new outboard motors are now made in Thailand.

As someone pointed out in an earlier reply, Harley makes and sell far more vehicles in Asia than it does in the USA. Their market dwarfs ours.

So if they were making things there to ship all of it to the USA you would have a point.

But its a global company- they are making and selling products in Asia to sell to Asians too. We would never sell a bike in Asia if they were 100% produced here.

" Americans like products from China "
Trump is showing China that "products" can be made anywhere.

Because sooner or later the Democrats are going to be in power again and their anti-business pogrom will be full throttle.

Would you go to the expense of building factories when you know that in 5 years we will probably have a democrat in the White House?

The China experiment is falling apart, thanks to Trump.

A communist gov’t pretending to embrace capitalism while manipulating their currency, stealing technology, and illegally subsidizing companies.

The dam is breaking and China’s worst nightmare is coming true....manufacturers are leaving for lower cost areas and will NEVER return to China again.

Harley Davidson riders/owners are inconsiderate assholes with their loud pipes. And don't give me this shit "it's for safety"

Harley Davidson owners rank down there with gardeners with their obnoxious leaf blowers.
