Planned Parenthood’s 136 Celebrity Supporters Alienate Americans

Planned Parenthood is harnessing star power in a new effort to advertise abortion. But with its straw-man messaging, Planned Parenthood and its celebrity PR team are only preaching to their choir. They’re not converting anyone.

On August 26, Planned Parenthood announced that it had collected the signatures of nearly 140 musicians as part of its latest campaign for abortion called “Bans Off My Body.” To boast about its supporters, the nation’s largest abortion provider purchased an ad listing the artists – from Lady Gaga to Ariana Grande – in Billboard magazine.

Planned Parenthood began its campaign in June in response to state bans on abortion. Leana Wen, then the president of Planned Parenthood, declared that Americans want “bodily autonomy” instead of “bans on abortion care.”

Or, perhaps, they can highlight how out of touch both they and Planned Parenthood are with the rest of America. Poll after poll reveals that the majority of Americans want abortion restrictions, including, more recently, a June NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll.

That’s because, as the pro-life movement stresses, every pregnancy involves two bodies: a mother and her unborn baby. In other words, abortion restrictions don’t place bans on bodies. They save them.

Planned Parenthood isn’t addressing arguments like those in its media ads, a new tactic for the abortion provider. In June, Planned Parenthood also helped organize signatures from CEOs and company executives for an ad supporting abortion in the New York Times. But using celebrity support is an old Planned Parenthood tactic.

“Bans Off My Body” uses dozens of celebrities – 136 musicians, to be exact – to promote abortion. And many of them, like Miley Cyrus, have backed Planned Parenthood before.

Not only did the musicians sign a petition against abortion restrictions, but also some will invite Planned Parenthood to “call fans to action at music festivals like Jay-Z's Made in America in Philadelphia and Music Midtown in Atlanta,” Billboard reported. “The nonprofit will also have a presence on a number of artists' national tours this year.”

With its celebrity endorsements, Planned Parenthood hopes to attract half a million signatures for its petition by Jan. 22, 2020 – a date that marks the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States.

“Musicians across the country are standing in solidarity,” Planned Parenthood declared on its webpage. “They’re saying access to sexual and reproductive health care is about the same type of freedom that allows them to create music and speak their truth — because no one is free unless they control their own body.”

And an unborn baby’s body, it would seem.

Planned Parenthood then listed the musicians in agreement, including big-name artists like Ariana Grande, Carly Rae Jepsen, Demi Lovato, Dua Lipa, Halsey, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Meghan Trainor, Miley Cyrus, and Nicki Minaj.

Planned Parenthood began its campaign in June in response to state bans on abortion. Leana Wen, then the president of Planned Parenthood, declared that Americans want “bodily autonomy” instead of “bans on abortion care.” As Planned Parenthood’s current, acting president, Alexis McGill Johnson told Billboard in August that, in particular, "Artists can highlight how out-of-touch some of our politicians are in this space.”

Some of them, like Dua Lipa, took to social media to urge their followers to join them in signing Planned Parenthood’s petition.

“25 MILLION. That’s how many women live in a state where abortion could be outlawed if Roe is overturned,” the artist tweeted August 24. “Join me & Planned Parenthood and tell politicians: get your #BansOffMyBody.”

Other female singers who supported Planned Parenthood included Alanis Morissette, Billie Eilish, Fiona Apple, Idina Menzel, Kacey Musgraves, Norah Jones, Sara Bareilles, Sarah McLachlan, Sia, and Tove Lo. Male artists who signed the petition included John Legend, Macklemore, T-Pain, and Troye Sivan.

Like Dua Lipa, Norah Jones tweeted on August 26: “Today, over 130 musicians and artists are standing with Planned Parenthood. Join Norah, @ArianaGrande, @kaceymusgraves, @billieeilish, @NICKIMINAJ and more now.”

That same day, Tove Lo tweeted, “Our bodies are our own. If they are not, we can not be truly free. Or equal.” And, in a statement released by Planned Parenthood, Eilish similarly added that "Every person deserves the right to control their body, their life, and their future."

Pro-lifers would agree. Except for that, they would urge, a person’s body, life, and future begin in the womb.

I recognize five names on that entire list and three are bands that I absolutely hate anyway so I won't even bother naming them.

Disappointed to see Beck and Carole King (who I like..) on that list. Going to have to take the Beck songs I have for my labor day weekend picnic party off my playlist now (sigh ...)

I have never heard of any of these people, except for 'Madame Gandhi". I thought that she had died in 1984.

Has the average person heard of 99% of these so-called stars? There seem to be about 10 people or groups who are moderately famous (as opposed to Beatles-level famous), and the rest have some sort of niche fame. Anywho, no one needs to form their opinions about anything based on the views of “stars.”

Oh, no, not Squirrel Flower.

Seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of 95% of them.. Never intend to the music of the other 5%.

It’s amazing to me how many people on that list are gay or lesbian, I’m only counting the out ones. Throw in the closeted ones or the bisexuals no one is sure of and it’s probably more than half the list.

So, are there a lot of gay men and lesbians having abortions?

These celebrities would not dare watch A Conversation with a Former Abortionist: Full Interview with Dr. Anthony Levatino. If you played it near them they would run screaming from the facts.

I don’t care for her, and never have, but she is probably pro-life. Not all liberals are pro abortion.

I think you read the op-ed wrong. It doesn’t mean that those on the list (the women) had abortions. It’s just that all of them are pro abortion and support Planned Parenthood. Also gay men know that they can not birth babies. You must think of those idiots who want to change their gender

Oh the yutes know them for sure. This site obviously skews to a certain age demographic. I am pretty sure one can get a whole host of oldies stars to sign on to this as well but it would be a much tougher sell to our crowd.
