When VietNam fell, and the boatloads of refugees made it to the Philippines, and then to the States, our church took in a couple with 2 kids. They all assimilated, but Dad did want the kids to retain a knowledge of the old language. No dice! Those kids quickly became Americans; and had no interest in retaining the Vietnamese language.
“They are no different than 1st generation immigrants and their children who come from any other country....”
No, actually they are different.
1) Most come from a neighboring country - Mexico. That has NEVER happened before in U.S. history.
2) Go to the Southwest. Hispanics are becoming a majority. As they grow in numbers there will simply be less cause to assimilate. After all why assimilate with white, English speaking America when you live in Spanish speaking Hispanic country in the Southwest?
3) Previous generations of immigrants had their ties with the old country often FORCIBLY broken:
Germans in Western Kansas - First World War, Second World War
Italian Americans - stigma over Italian fascism, WWII, mafia, etc.
Eastern Europeans - Cold War, Communism, etc.
None of that can happen with Hispanics because that would be “racist”.
Then you have the oddities: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/town-kansas-unique-accent-180969390/
That NEVER happened with other groups. They assimilated to the U.S. population. Now the U.S. population is assimilating to the immigrants.
In my experience....yes. A lot of them are. Not all of course, but one hell of a lot. My niece married a guy from Chile. He’s “hispanic”. He’s also clearly white and identifies as such. One of my best friends has a cousin he’s close with. The cousin married a former college cheerleader at our university. She’s a blue eyed blonde who would perfectly fit into Hitler’s aryan ideal. Her dad is from Indiana. Her mom is from Venezuela. She therefore counts as “hispanic” (I don’t think she even speaks spanish). Take a wild guess what their kids are going to classify as in both cases. They’d be stupid to check the box for “white” when they can get all kinds of advantages by checking the box for “hispanic”.
Of course for both sets of kids, all 4 of their parent’s ancestors came exclusively from Europe originally....
Rates of intermarriage for “hispanics” are 50% in the first generation. That is historically high. Its also 50% for Asians. When you’re sleeping with someone every night and having kids with them, you’re going to be assimilated.
The kids learn English to make it easier to get on that welfare, which they use almost as much as the blacks. Hooray for assimilation!
One I-Heart (English) radio station I listen to has the occasional ad in Spanish.
Only two grandchildren of friends I know have American or Haitian parenting. The others are all Latino. (And none are married). :(
Some streets in Miami are re-named for Latino pols from South America. Go figure.
After Hurricane Irma, try to converse with rebuilding crews in English. If you’re lucky, you’ll find ONE who does!
Tune through the AM dial in South Florida. You’ll find only two stations in English—and they’re “sports” stations.
The rest are a mish-mosh of Spanish, Haitian, Hebrew, and Brazilian-Portuguese. The same for UHF TV. Might as well be New York City. Glad I moved to a Florida county of mostly Mid-Western States Veteran-Retirees.
Labels should be printed in six languages, with English in the largest print. (So we Seniors can read it!)
Up here on the Canadian border, the two languages printed are English and French.
Which Europeans did not assimilate?
It pains me that Freepers...many anyhow...are still stuck in Bushie naïveté and idealism
As we drown
You are 100% correct. By and large Mexicans, Central and South Americans hate America and Americans. They’re only here because they pull billions out of this nations economy and send it back to their home countries. How many of you ever knew that German nationals living in the US pull $2.8 billion dollars a year out of our economy and send it back to the Fatherland. Germany for God’s sake!
You will also laugh that I've been accused of being a white supremacist and racist by lefties for advocating immigration law. Would be kind of awkward at the dinner table and family holidays... *sigh*
NO!!!!!!
You have mail.
Allan Wall, there’s a name from the past.
IIRC Wall lived and worked in Mexico for years, and is married to a Mexican woman.
Allen Wall was someone not infected with the delusional thinking of Bush Republicans, open border lobbyists, and other betrayers of middle class America.
He likes Mexico but has no desire to have the United States replace its culture with that of Mexico. Which is exactly what is happening with the mass migration from south of the border. California is the warning for those not paying attention.
yep, that’s right. We should learn from California. Sadly, many refuse to do so.
One just has to look at the electoral map of Texas. All the border counties but one send Democrats to Congress. And that one will be gone in 2020. If anything, Mexicans are assimilating us.
