Dan Rather: America ‘Sliding from Extreme Nationalism into Tribalism’

A feeling of “extreme nationalism” has gripped the United States, according to former CBS News anchor Dan Rather. “We have our differences and President Trump has found it to his … advantage to exploit those differences,” Rather said during an interview Thursday morning on MSNBC’s Morning Joe while promoting his new book.

Rather continued:

We’re in danger of sliding from extreme nationalism into tribalism. In our country, which is a new experiment in history — first time in history any people tried to be free… we’re constantly trying to perfect it. It depends on [us] as a people, as a nation, that we agree on certain core values such as rule of law.

CBS was once the gold standard in broadcast news.

I would take issue with that statement. I think they've been on a mission all along. Somebody decided that Edward R. Murrow was going to take McCarthy out at the knees.

Maybe their radio new during the war.

Suggest Rather read America's Declaration of Independence and Constitution of the United States, as well as President George Washington's Farewell Address for a brief lesson in the history of the United States. Better still, an online reading of Frothingham's 1900 history entitled, The Rise of the Republic of the United States of America might educate him and other Progressives on the real history of the development of the philosophy and principles which made possible this land of freedom and opportunity.
