I am always amazed when someone focus on one small item and ignores everything else.
In forums, I like to focus on one aspect at a time. It keeps communication, well, more focused.
The “germs on touch screens” thing is a real issue, if a touch screen is used a lot, by a lot of different people. In fact check here: https://www.healthline.com/health-news/want-to-avoid-dangerous-bacteria-dont-use-touch-screens
That is one of many articles discussing it.
I only brought up the issue, because I was trying to think of any negative aspects with touch screens, from the customer perspective, and that was the first one that came up.
Regarding me, personally, it’s not an issue. I have the constitution of a buzzard. I don’t get sick and I don’t worry about germs. But I know a lot of people do, especially in heavily populated areas. It theoretically could cause some people to not use them.
I also don’t eat fast food. It may be why I don’t get sick. :)
And regarding germs being everywhere, you are correct. The challenge to your immune system is not exposure to germs. It’s exposure to TOO MANY germs. That’s why you don’t die of the exposure to germs via a cut, but if you stripped ALL of your skin off, the bacteria would kill you in fairly short order. It’s why severe burn victims are at risk.
Yeah, I figure kiosks could be replaced, but I’m from the days where IBM won the computer wars because businesses already had card readers, while superior computer systems used superior, but new, data entry processes. So companies went with IBM and used their good old card readers.
I use kiosks at grocery stores all the time. Now, if McDonalds can leapfrog that technology, I’m all for it. But the main point is that some sort of customer direct order entry should pretty much replace the order takers at the counter or drive up line.
Heck, while I typed this a workmate in the meeting next to me just ordered her lunch online. It will be delivered shortly.
Good grief - there are germs EVERYWHERE - even on the doors entering the place. You cant touch ANYTHING without germ exposure. SMH, live in a bubble wrapped world
If we were somehow able to avoid germs for a long period of time, we would be at real risk if we were exposed to even common germs at a later point as our immunity system will have its guard down.
It would be like drilling an infantry for battle day after day. They are ready to go to war at a moment's notice.
However, if you gave that infantry six months to rest idle, they would very quickly lose their fighting edge. If thrown into battle after six months of R&R, they will likely be decimated.
Use your knuckle instead of fingertip and a hand sanitizer afterwards.
No everyone lives like Howard Hughes.
Use your knuckle instead of fingertip...
To be clear, I’m not talking about my concerns, personally. I’m talking about the stuff I think some people in our culture are concerned about. It’s why I drive a sports car but some people drive an SUV because they think it’s safer. ;)

However, I don’t write the rules, and I don’t seem to share the majority opinion.
I’ve been at somewhere the order takers and money takers are standing outside working their way through the lines of cars.
They are moving up to 200 Cars per hour through those lines.
This will not work at McDonald’s however. Different personnel.
+1
Yes! Barbara Billingsley helped the write the algorithm
I don’t go to fast food places so I’ve never used a kiosk to order food. Though at La Guardia airport they got rid of all the waiting staff in all the bars and restaurants and put an ipad at every seat. Couldn’t even order a $21 (!) cocktail or pay in cash from the bartender, had to enter it in the ipad and pay with a credit card.
FWIW, at gas stations when I have to type in my zip code, I use a knuckle. I’m truly not phobic of these things - I agree tables, doorknobs, counters etc are full of germs - but those gas pump keypads are almost always visible filthy. I don’t carry around any santitizer.
I actually use the business end of my Saturday Night Special, conveniently carried in my right front jeans pocket.
