Full Title: Trump expected to announce gun control legislation this week. But the substance of it is a mystery
The Trump administration is expected to announce its proposal to curb gun violence as soon as next week. But after the Democrats' fiery debate on gun control, what President Trump will support is far from clear.
The White House has been talking to a trio of lawmakers: Democrats Chris Murphy and Joe Manchin and Republican Pat Toomey. They all support tougher background checks.
After the recent mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas, Mr. Trump called for gun control legislation.
"I'm talking about meaningful, write that word, meaningful, meaningful background checks," Mr. Trump said on August 9.
But Mr. Trump never defined what meaningful means and quickly backed off after talking to the National Rifle Association.
"We already have very serious background checks," Mr. Trump said on August 21.
Since then, Mr. Trump has called mass shootings a mental health issue and criticized what he sees as overzealous Democrats.
"Democrats want to confiscate guns from law-abiding Americans, so they are totally defenseless when somebody walks into their house with a gun," Mr. Trump said.
Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke reinforced the president's argument at this week's debate.
"Hell yes, we're going to take your AR-15, your AK-47. We're not going to allow it to be used against fellow Americans anymore," O'Rourke said to loud cheers.
Some of his fellow Democrats now fear O'Rourke's words will be used against their efforts to pass new gun laws.
"I frankly think that that clip will be played for years at Second Amendment rallies with organizations that try to scare people by saying that democrats are coming for your guns," said Democratic Senator Chris Coons of Delaware.

How about NO "gun control"? Instead, strengthen firearm rights, which are quickly being lost in dozens of states.
Millions of Americans are now "Instant Felons" because of legislation passed in states that "outlaw" magazines greater than 10 rounds. Law abiding Americans have been thrown into prison because they ran afoul of unconstitutional gun laws in certain states.
Fight for the 2nd Amendment Mr. President!
The Constitution doesn’t say anything about background checks.
We’ve spent four years reading one false story after another about Donald Trump. Why don’t we actually wait to hear it from the lips of the president himself before we all start “flipping” out?

Thanks for pointing it out that we should not start judging Pres. Trump based on MSMA allegations, when we have already seen how much they lie and try to turn people against Trump.

They all support tougher background checks.....how do you make background checks tougher? It’s basically a very quick criminal history check, done on a database that is controlled by the FBI, to see if you have a felony conviction or domestic violence conviction. It does not have any information about someone’s potential drug or alcohol treatment or addiction, because doing so would violate HIPPA, one of the causes championed by the Left.

I’m not sure why any right thinking American doesn’t own multiple guns & sufficient ammunition at this point in our history. I won’t give mine up and I don’t give a damn what laws are passed going forward.
Use the same ‘background checks’ for the 2nd amendment as they use for the rest of the amendments!

if the illegal “gun confiscation” effort ever happens in America,

IF the D’s really really wanted to reduce violence, they would reduce the number of regulations that block people’s opportunities in their lives, repeal all of the existing illegal gun laws and regs, and provide more funding for mental health (yes, there could be this one proper role for the fed govt in this matter)
but they don’t want to reduce any violence, they want to USE violence to impose their outright dictatorship on the American people
Exactly...It seems a few flip out right off the bat only to find out later that what President Trump said or did turns out to be the right thing...
NO “Red Flag” laws, NO “universal” background checks (which is gun registration”, no Beto gun grabs. If Trump signs such nonsense, he WILL NOT be re-elected in 2020. If I wanted to be disarmed, I could have voted for Hillary the Criminal Clintoon.
I am, yes. If they’ve done their debt to society, YES, they should be able to be armed.
