I always thought there was some kind of law that said that the CIA was not allowed to engage in any kind of operations within the borders of the US.. (?)

I had a high school class with Sirhan Sirhan in Pasadena, California. I spoke with the history teacher later - S2 was quite involved in class discussions about the Constitution/ Senate etc. Nothing aberrant but definitely on the intense end of things.
McCarthy weakened LBJ (not HHH), then RFK immediately jumped in, then LBJ announces he's done.

I watched the Netflix special on Killing of Robert Kennedy and it is excellent. Lot of evidence was destroyed by Police Dept. It is told by his friend Paul Schrade who was also wounded that day. I have never believed that Siran acted alone. Get a chance watch the documentary, really compelling evidence that points to cover up.
Well, it’s been a few years and my timeline is 2 1/2 weeks off from yours—which I’m sure is the correct one. I’m relying solely on memories of that crazy time. I can say that McCarthy was seen at the time as the anti-LBJ and after LBJ withdrew, the anti-Hubert Humphrey. Many of McCarthy’s followers viewed RFK as taking away his place. With RFK’s assassination, the Democrat establishment rallied behind HHH—one reason for the excitement at the ‘68 Convention.

Eye witnesses saw Sirhan shoot his victim. Sirhan likely avoided the death penalty by having no recollection , avoiding the culpability of pre-meditating the assasination. He had every motivation to have no recollection.
