Ending Daughter Elimination in the Developing World

For most parents, daughters are a blessing. But in many parts of south and east Asia, where there exists a strong, culturally-rooted preference for sons, daughters are often unwanted and often selectively aborted prior to birth simply on account of their sex.

In many Asian cultures, sons are strongly valued to carry on the family name, inherit property, or to provide parents with care and financial support in sickness and old age. Daughters, on the other hand, are often seen as a burden due to the practice of dowry in places like India, and due to the traditional custom that daughters leave their birth parents behind after marriage and go on to live with and care for their husband’s parents.

Since the introduction of ultrasound technology several decades ago made it easy and affordable for parents to know the sex of their child prior to birth, millions of girls have gone “missing” due to the practice of sex-selective abortion.

In India alone, I have found that approximately 15.8 million girls have been eliminated through sex-selective abortion since 1990. Nearly 550,000 girls go “missing” at birth in India every year.

The number of girls lost to sex-selective abortion in China is likely even greater. Daughter elimination has also been widespread in many other parts of the world including Vietnam, Taiwan, the Caucasus, and parts of the Balkans.

Due to the widespread practice of sex-selective abortion, deep gender imbalances now exist in places like China and India. In China, by 2030, there will be 30 million more men of marrying age than women of marrying age. In India, according to one study, at least one in ten men in India will still have never been married by the time they turn 50 years old.

Chinese culture is screwed up. My wife is Chinese-American, raised here but despises the male-oriented Chinese ways. When her mother was born in China, her grandfather was so upset at the birth of a female that he went out and paid to adopt a boy - the same day his daughter was born. The adopted boy got all the attention and inherited the family fortune (they were rich). When my wife's mom was old enough, she was told get ready to leave because she was going to get married - the parents selected a husband for her (my wife's father). That's the way it was done in China. My wife's father, although Chinese, was an American G.I. raised in the U.S.A. who went to China after WWII for a wife.

The adopted son who inherited the family fortune (property, jewelry stores, etc.) lost it all when the communists took over. Life's a bitch!

Anyway, my wife's parents favored the sons among the six kids they had, and even their trust documents give more to the sons. Some of the culture still remains although they're raised here in the U.S.A. Wife is pissed at her brothers for that, but takes care of her mom's needs in old age - sons do nothing.

I have both sons and daughters.

I love them all. For the life of me, I cannot fathom someone who would so callously, and cruelly treat these little ones. My daughters have given me some of the greatest joy that I will ever experience on this planet.

In the years I was away traveling and flying so often, they would greet me like a hero when I returned home, and present me with the pictures they colored. They would dress up as princesses, and ask me to dance with them at the "ball." When I was sick, they would stroke my hair and sing to me. At their weddings, they honored me. To this day, they still write me notes and texts, telling me what a great father I am.

"All Cultures Are Equal!" No, they are not. Any culture that doesn't value daughters is a sick and twisted one.

Moreover, our nation and culture is not immune to rebuke. We have murdered 60 million infants in the last 45 years alone.

All of my children are born again believers in Jesus Christ, and because of His sacrifice, we will all be together in the House of God, forever. Life on this earth is full of burdens and distractions: jobs, travel, commitments, worries, health problems, sadness, and sometimes loneliness. But I will walk in the gardens of heaven with my little ones forever, and we will hold hands.

India touts itself as the largest democracy in the world, and has passed laws to end “female infanticide” through abortion - but it persists anyway. Wealthier people pay the doctor for an off-the-record heads-up about a baby’s gender (and kill her in the womb); poorer people just dump recently-born females along the roadside.

I’m guessing “daughter elimination” is replacing the previous phrase to describe this - “female infanticide” - because the former was an outright admission that abortion is cold-blooded murder.

Call me crazy, but I suspect this has been occurring in the US for decades. The imbalances in my elementary and high school classes were too noticeable (about 3:2 in favor of males) - and that was a long time ago. I see the same in my children’s classes today; pairs of boys and girls file down the aisle at graduation, and at the end are many pairs of boys.
