Northern California fire officials say a man dependent on oxygen died about 12 minutes after Pacific Gas and Electric shut down power to the area as part of a massive effort to prevent fire.
El Dorado County Fire Chief Lloyd Ogan said Friday that fire personnel responded to a call in Pollock Pines that came in after 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.
He said crews arrived to find an unresponsive man in his 60s and were unable to revive him.
Ogan said the man's oxygen equipment required power but could not say whether the shutdown was related to his death.
PG&E spokesman Jeff Smith said it has not been able to confirm the accuracy of the report.

This is very strange to me. When people are on oxygen here, in addition the regular machine, they are issued tanks that do not require electricity that will last at least 24 hrs. in case of emergency.
Most people on devices requiring electricity are advised to have alternate power sources whether it’s a generator, battery etc.
Or maybe the $50 Billion squandered on the failed “bullet train” boondoggle could have been used to build a state-of-the-art, secure, non-pyrotechnic power grid statewide.

And like most people who become technology dependent, they fail to keep ready access to simpler means of getting a job done.
Plus people who sleep with oxygen often do so with prongs, masks, even tents which can come loose, or otherwise fail.
I’m a doctor. Family practice. almost 30 yrs practicing. I can’t think of a single patient with an oxygen concentrator who doesn’t have readily available tank/mask as backuo. It’s what you do. Like having a spare tire in your car.
In this case, the failure is his. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. California is notorious for brownouts, and the occasional blackout.
Plan accordingly folks, there’s more coming.

How do you get to your spare in your sleep? Do you sleep w/the tank instead? Can you have more than 2 tanks?
Yeah, although if he died within 12 minutes of having the oxygen cut off, I’d say he was too sick to help himself.
It’s the family members or caregivers that should have planned for the power outage and been prepared to switch oxygen sources quickly.
But you know what, Power goes off here and I sleep through it.
Unless the oxygen concentrator is equipped with a battery and alarm if power goes off, I could see a family sleeping through a power outage.
If I was a power company exec, I would have a website where people in my distribution area could sign up indicating they are medically dependent on power and the type of dependency and the severity.
And then you could at least notify them prior to an planned outage. Or provide police a list of people to check on during an unplanned outage.
If he was on oxygen why didn’t he have a backup generator?
Hmmmm. Yeah, that's a tuffy alright.
Another poster linked to more information. It read like he didn’t wake up in time and was trying to reach his portable when he died.
