The Supreme Court granted the Michigan Republican party a win on Monday by throwing out a lower court ruling that required dozens of congressional and legislative districts to be redrawn due to concerns they had been gerrymandered by Republicans.
The high courts 5-to-4 decision reverses a ruling by the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, which demanded the state redraw nine congressional districts and 25 state districts by August 1.
Mondays decision also follows the Supreme Courts ruling in June that it would leave gerrymandering cases to state courts.
Partisan gerrymandering claims present political questions beyond the reach of the federal courts, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the June decision, which dealt with district boundaries in Maryland and North Carolina.
That ruling divided the court along ideological lines with Roberts serving as the swing vote.
Roberts joined conservative Justices Brett Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch to strike down the lower courts ruling, while liberal Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagen, and Stephen Breyer voted to preserve the lower courts finding that the districts must be redrawn.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s still kicking, eh?
“Ruth Bader Ginsburgs still kicking, eh?”
It’s galvanic, they have her attached to a battery
Can’t wait for RGB to slip on that figurative banana peel...
“districts will not be redrawn until 2022, when a bipartisan redistricting commission resulting from a state referendum last fall will assume the task of redrawing the boundaries.”
Bipartisan commission means Dem controlled as so called “independents” are included.
F yeah
Unless Elijah Cummings' staff is forging her signature, too.

HUGE WIN
5/4? It should have been 9/0. There truly are four activist judges on that panel. The federal government has no say in how the lines in each state are drawn. i.e. the SCOTUS has no say.
“....liberal Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagen, and Stephen Breyer voted to preserve the lower courts finding that the districts must be redrawn....”
What the libs voted for is the potential redistricting IMPACT — not the redistricting itself. Just being realistic...
John Roberts came through, in this case anyway.
Could today be the day Ruth Buzzi Ginsburg slips on a banana peel?
“Cant wait for RGB to slip on that figurative banana peel...”
Read your post after composing my own, akalinin. Definitely on the same wavelength.
That’s good news for here in NC too.
This was 100% expected after the Court’s decision in June regarding partisan gerrymandering. Just a bit of housecleaning on the Court’s part via its order list and no new opinions were handed down.
Gerrymandering can be good or bad.
Good if it’s done the right way.
Bad if it’s done the LEFT way..................
Bingo
