Huge swath of California could go dark with widest power outages yet expected this weekend

This weekend’s planned power outages could be the largest yet in California, as utilities such as Pacific Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison order wide blackouts to prevent more blazes — and more wildfire liability — amid heavy, hot winds.

PG&E, which has 5.4 million electric customers and provides power to 16 million Californians, was projecting Thursday that it could shut off power across nearly all of its territory in Northern California on Sunday and Monday because of ferocious gusts.

“This system will likely be the strongest event of the year from a wind perspective,” the utility said on its website. “Federal forecast agencies are in alignment that this will be a high-risk weather event.”

They should call these power outages “Republican conversion events”.

There is nothing like seeing sitting in the dark watching your food spoil to make you think about how stupid your government actually is.

Just pull the plug on LA and San-Fran-Sissyco, that should lighten the load.

The company I work for had a bunch of overstocked industrial portable generator left over from our hurricane preparedness. The storm didn’t hit so we were worried they would not get sold. They were collecting dust.

Along comes California planned power outages and they were scoop up like candy.

And Wonder boy Newsom was all over the news yesterday condemning the utility companies for shutting off the power and then threatening to hold them accountable for any fires sparked by their lines,.

They should just SHUT Down all the Power.

They taught us about the Dark Ages when I was in school...not too often we get to relive certain parts of history...I expect some “institution” will try to get some serious grants to do a comparison study of then and now...

That bad?
I grew up in San Jose in the late 70’s and early 80’s.
Awesome place to be a kid.
I would have gone to HS with Pat Tillman if we didn’t move...

Strange - my uncles moved from rural upstate NY to California immediately after WWII and their discharge from the Navy. In all our visits with them, they never mentioned wild-fires or electricity outages (or murders, or illegals or homeless encampments, for that matter)

They always spoke to us rust-belt kids about California as a sunny, beautiful promised land of combined natural wonder and American progress.

Thank God they died in the 1980s. They wouldn’t recognize the place now.

It doesn’t sound as though there is a fix in the works either. This will cost companies a lot of money.
