Utah banning ‘conversion therapy’ with Mormon church backing
Idaho State Journal ^ | 11/30/2019 | IdahoStateJournal

Utah is on its way to becoming the 19th state to ban the discredited practice of conversion therapy in January after state officials formed a proposal that has the support of the influential Church of a Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Republican Gov. Gary Herbert announced Tuesday night that church leaders back a regulatory rule his office helped craft after legislative efforts for a ban on the therapy failed earlier this year.

The faith known widely as the Mormon church opposed a previous version of the rule because it wanted assurances that church leaders and members who are therapists would be allowed to provide spiritual counseling for parishioners or families — which were included in the latest conversion therapy ban plan.

So leftist teachers and activists can have free reign to brainwash kids into believing that they are “gay” or “transgender” or whatever, but if anyone tries to counsel them otherwise, that’s illegal. In liberal bizarroworld, it’s legal to convince normal kids that they’re something they’re not, but illegal to try to convince them of the reverse. Got it.

While I know virtually nothing about Mormon theology, I had thought they were generally conservative on the various social issues of the day.

It sounds odd to me, that on this social issue, the Mormon church has gone liberal.

My experience is that the Mormons are only interested in making converts and fealty to doctrine is secondary. Remember when it was okay to have multiple wives? But they “changed”. Remember when they would not allow blacks? But they “changed”. I’m sure they’ve already caved on homosexuals and the homosexuals are now demanding the Mormons “change”.

The bill defines conversion therapy as "a practice or treatment that claims that therapy will result in a complete or permanent reversal in the patient or client's sexual orientation; asserts that a complete and permanent change...is necessary; subjects a patient or client to physical discomfort through aversive treatment that causes nausea, vomiting or other unpleasant physical sensations; or provides electric shock or other electrical therapy, including electroconvulsive therapy oro transcranial magnet stimulation."

In most states it is already illegal for any therapist to claim that any particular mode of therapy will result in a complete or permanent reversal of the client's symptoms. Apart from the law, that is also a standard of professional ethics. Same with aversive treatment. So I don't know why this law is needed, unless just to send a "chilling effect" to therapists who want to assist a client experiencing unwanted same sex attraction.

“to ban the discredited practice of conversion therapy”

I’m old enough to remember when they used the term “controversial”, rather than “discredited” or “debunked” in articles like this.

This is a PERFECT EXAMPLE of how the media has moved to IN YOUR FACE Leftist ideology, and, at least as far as I’m concerned, is a valid reason to remove their First Amendment protections.

I expect to see the LDS Church Prophet receive another vision and announce that LDS Church will embrace polygamy again.

If you read the post, and even bothered to link the article, you would see the Church members had trouble keeping the bill from passing last time. So, instead of just seeing it as a loss, celebrate that we can still counsel our own people.

_____ ____

” church leaders and members who are therapists would be allowed to provide spiritual counseling for parishioners or families — which were included in the latest conversion therapy ban plan.”

My experience is that the Mormons are only interested in making converts and fealty to doctrine is secondary.

Members of the Mormon Church are expected to tithe, giving ten percent of their income to the church, and tithes constitute the bulk of the church's income. No wonder they are interested in making converts.

“I’m old enough to remember when they used the term “controversial”, rather than “discredited” or “debunked” in articles like this.”

If they like it, it is controversial and then write about why we are wrong to make it controversial.

If they do not like it, it is discredited and then write why we are wrong to make it discredited.

Absolutely spot on. Tell a big lie often enough and the pliant will believe it.

I have to wonder by what standard was conversion therapy discredited.

All psychotherapy has fairly low success rates. Cures are rare in psychotherapy.

Generally, any success in psychotherapy happens only as long as the patient continues the therapy.

If all psychotherapy is held to the same standard then psychotherapy is discredited and debunked.
